Cruthis recalls that as she was driving, “I felt the car skid a little bit, and then I lost control and I couldn’t turn the wheel.” She remembers that when the car started to swerve, “I tucked my feet under the seat because my dad told me never to hit the brakes in this situation. I tensed my arms up so I didn’t touch the wheel and cause any more damage than was about to happen.” The car began to spin in the opposite direction. “I spun about three times before it drove straight into a ravine. It (the car) flipped over once, and then all I remember was the car being at the bottom of the ravine, blood being everywhere, and my head out the window,” states Cruthis.…

“The Outcasts of Poker Flat” is an unfortunate tale involving the death of several exiled outcasts by many different means. The actions of two of the people in the group ultimately led to the death of two young girls, known as Piney and “The Duchess,” by starvation. “Mother Shipton” another female in the group, also died by starvation after giving her food to the younger girls so that they may survive. Starvation was the cause of three of the four deaths in the story, as the fourth death was the result of Mr. Oakhurst’s cowardice, which caused him to shoot himself. However, the three deaths by starvation could have been prevented with a piece of technology. The piece of technology that could have saved the three girls from dying is known as Cup O Noodles.…

Total Opposites In the short story "The Outcasts of Poker Flat" by Bret Harte, the author uses characters in the story that have very similar characteristics, except for one, "Uncle Billy." The residents of Poker Flat were very upset with him always winning bets and all of their money. Out of all the people that are banned from Poker Flat, Oakhurst possesses the best qualities out of the group. The people of the town were attempting to clean up Poker Flat, but they really only rid themselves of one thief and three good hearted people that had some bad breaks. The other people that were forced to leave were "The Duchess" and "Mother Shipton", both of which were prostitutes, and "Uncle Billy" who was a gambler and a drunk and the most opposite character in the story from Oakhurst.…
Even in this tense moment, my dad cracked a joke. My mom was still panicking about the fact that I had almost died, and my twin sister had come outside to see what was going on. I hung my head low, arms dangling at my sides, and holding the fire extinguisher by the hose. I was safe, but it felt like something inside of me had died.…

Everyone is dead. It happened in a moment, one small minute has altered my life. I always told myself life isn't fair, it never has been, but this once I ask for a warning or a sign that I would be spending my last day with my family. Everything was fine for a week after the move here, just like the calm before the storm. Now thanks to one drunk driver I'm left on a hospital bed while the nurses play cards. Talk about sympathy. That monster killed Simon. He was just an innocent kid that dreamed of being a scientist, but that dream will die along with many others. My parents, dead, the two people in the world who have loved me with all their heart for 15 long years are dead in seconds. The drunk could have hit any other car destroyed any…
Our family car was a very reliable bronze Nissan Murano, this car had been part of the family for at least 5 years, it had taken us to Mcdonald’s trillions of times. However much we loved this car for it’s design, it would not save us from what was in our fates on that particular day. My mom, brother and I were on our way to one of my friend’s house and he lives approximately 15 minutes out of California, Missouri if you take the highway. We were driving approximately sixty miles per hour and we just about to turn onto my friend’s road.…
From there it was like everything was in slow motion. Everything in the car went flying, Chelsea was screaming at the top of her lungs, and the passenger window glass shattering. Finally, it stopped. The car was now sitting up right, and everything was still. I looked over and asked Chelsea if she was alright, and she answered yes. We both climbed out of the car and instantly started crying, and wondering what we should do. I didn’t have a license and figured I would go to jail, and Chelsea would wish she was in jail so she wouldn’t have to deal with what her parents were going to do with her for her car being completely totaled. We decided the best thing to do was to find help. Neither of us had cell phones, so we set off for the nearest house. Luckily, it was only maybe a mile up the road.…
As I sat flaccid in the hot seat I could hear my sister answer the phone, and instantaneously her voice begin to get shaky, losing its usually calm composure. Worried now, I strived to decipher what was going on, I shifted my weight so that I could now see the tears welling up in my sister's eyes, listening intently, I heard the familiar voice of my mother seeping from within the cell phone. Knowing now that something was wrong within the family a flood of horrible scenarios began rushing through my head; what if someone was in a car accident? Was everyone okay? What was going on here? Then, with one word, all my crazy visions disappeared and I could feel the pit of my stomach drop, as my throat seemed to twist itself into a knot. Something was wrong with my grandma.…

It was a typical drive to school- fingers tapping on the steering wheel as I sing along with the overplayed pop song playing on the radio station. As I approached an intersection, I saw a dark blue sedan coming from the left, but realized that the driver had a stop sign and I did not. Therefore, I continued driving-still singing and tapping to the rhythm of the song- when suddenly, I found myself slamming on the brakes. My body jerked forward, and I looked up to find the front of my car collided with the dark blue sedan.…
