I want to inform more people how important early screening for breast cancer. Early screening can save lives.
INTRODUCTION: Attention-getter: When breast cancer is detected early, the 5-year relative survival rate is 98 percent, but declines to 84 percent for regional disease and 23 percent when cancer has spread to other parts of the body. Audience motivation: Most doctors feel that early detection tests for breast cancer save thousands of lives each year, and that many more lives could be saved if even more women and their health care providers took advantage of these tests. a.i. In September 2011, Giuliana was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer. Giuliana was conflicted with what decisions to make. During the month of October Giuliana underwent a surgery called a lumpectomy. A lumpectomy is a procedure that removes the cancer from your breast. Once the surgery was over Giuliana was thrilled she thought the worse was over. Later the results came in and the surgery had not worked. Giuliana was faced with two options to have a mastectomy, a procedure to remove the breasts. Giuliana had the surgery in December of 2011.
