Block 1

The materials needed to conduct this experiment are six small squares of bread, a container of milk, four small Ziploc bags, a thermometer, a phone to record data and a heat lamp. The container of milk will be used for residue on the inside of two of the plastic bags. The heat lamp will be used to generate heat onto the bread towards the possibility of mold. The thermometer is used to measure the heat that the heat lamp is producing; this is to make sure it does not get too hot. The thermometer, milk, and heat lamp are part of the independent variables. The dependent variable is the amount of mold that grows. The experimenter should begin this experiment by organizing their materials so that they are all in front of he/she. Start by opening one of the plastic bags. Over a sink, pour a small amount of milk into the bag, close it then make sure the inside is completely covered in milk residue. Then pour the milk out into the sink. Repeat this process with another bag. Carefully place a piece of bread in each of the milk-saturated bags and secure. Put these bags aside and grab the other two clean plastic bags. Put a piece of bread in each of them and close it. The two extra pieces of bread with be used without a bag, this is the control group. Next find a safe location to keep the bags of bread for the experiment, away from possible culprets such as mice. Once the location is decided, plug in the heat lamp and angle it towards the surface where the bread will sit. The head of the heat lamp should not be anymore than ten inches away from the bags of bread. After the heat lamp is situated, place a bag with milk-residue, a bag with only bread, and a single piece of bread under the heat lamp. Put the other two bags and the other single piece of bread away from the heat lamp, out of the light. Record the data of the bread at the same time everyday for as long until mold

    For this experiment my hypothesis was correct. The purpose of this experiment was achieved by observing and finding out the characteristics of each substance. The sugar turned brown and smelled good when heated, salt turned black and smelled like burnt rubber when heated, dirt turned to mud when water was added, and baking soda started to bubble when vinegar was added. According to table 1 the data shows that the unknown substance had similar characteristics to both sugar and dirt. And so to find out if my hypothesis was correct or not experiments were carried out based on tests that were characteristics of either sugar or dirt. One experiment was heating the unknown substance to check if it would start drying up and bubbling brown. The other was adding water to test if it would turn into mud.     The independent variable in this science fair project is the species of flower (pompons, alstroemeria or sunflower) and the amount of sugar added to the water (none, 1 teaspoon, 2 teaspoons or 3 teaspoons). The dependent variable is the number of days the flowers will remain fresh. This is determined by observing the flowers everyday for signs of wilting. The constants (control variables) are the size of the vase, the amount of distilled water in the vase and the room temperature. 

2. Cut the stems of the pompons, alstroemeria and sunflowers in a slanted angle using the scissors provided. Fill the 12 vases with equal amounts of distilled water. Label three vases each as 0, 1, 2 and 3. The three sets of vases correspond to the three species of flowers. Place one stalk of each type of flower inside the vases labeled as 0, 1, 2 and 3. Add one teaspoon of sugar to the vases labeled 1, two teaspoons of sugar into the vases labeled 2, and 3 teaspoons of sugar into the vases labeled 3. Do not add sugar into the vase labeled 0. Add 3 drops of vinegar into all 12 vases.

4. Observe the 12 vases daily and note the number of days during which the flowers remained fresh. Record the results in the table…
