Reaction Paper 1: Breaching Exercise
Due 2/12/15

As a sociology student I have some experience in the field of messing with social norms. When assigned to create a breaching exercise situation I can say I felt comfortable as opposed to the first time I was instructed to break a norm. Breaching experiments obtain to study people’s responses to disruptions of generally conventional social rules or norms. I will admit I had a few weird ideas that I have always been interested but had some difficulty finding the means to conduct these experiments. I narrowed down my options and came up with one that was more realistic and decided to purposely mistake shoppers for employees in department or grocery stores. I conducted this breaching exercise in three different places over the past week. The first place I went to was Target. Everyone pretty much knows that the standard Target outfit involves a red polo, however there weren’t any red polo’s walking around that were not actual employees. I came across a middle-aged man in a red t-shirt who was looking in the bath section and simply asked him, “Excuse me, could you direct me to the electronics section?” His reaction wasn’t anything to look into; he simply just laughed and explained that he doesn’t work there. He looked down at his red shirt and thought I just made an honest mistake. I gave a shy laugh; acting embarrassed, apologized and walked away. The second place I visited to try this experiment was Walmart. I walked into Walmart with a friend and went to the gardening section. I decided to come up with a little story rather than just asking a direct question. I found a man who looked like he was in his young 20s and started rambling, explaining that I had a big project I was working on for my outdoor patio and I wanted a specific look. He let me ramble on for about a minute and a half before he cut me off by explaining he was shopping for his own patio furniture and would be no

Cool People Only Break the Rules by Elizabeth Winkler. Is an article that states when given the option, people tend to bend the rules when it comes to the social norms. Obviously, it is not implying going around and getting felony charges against yourself. Rather stepping outside of the social normality that we have today. I for one agree with the author's point of view. Which is that cool is base off a specific person and their perceptions.…

For the second breaching experiment I decided to do the “riding the elevator backwards” exercise. I completed three trials of this experiment. Each of the three trials were done on the UCSB campus during the afternoon. I also completed the exercise with a different number of people each time. The results that I got were interesting, in one of the trials the behavior went completely unnoticed and in others it stood out greatly. I also fond it interesting a behavior so small as standing one direction in the elevator has grown to be an expected social convention. Similarly to the first experiment, I also found it interesting how this behavior of facing one direction is taken for granted until somebody steps out of the norm. A few of things that…

    1. Anton Rabie and Ronnen Harary created a product that allowed customers to express their own creativity through styling grass hair that sprouted from a small humanlike head. They called this product Earth Buddy and the popularity soon spread like wildfire. Product sales started through Toronto-area flower shops and gift stores but as demand increased they were able to start distributing Earth Buddy at K-Mart, Toys R Us, Wal-Mart and stores alike. However, the production of Earth Buddies were time consuming and very dependent on the weather. The production process had a total of seven steps. The first step was filling which included six machines that filled the basic round heads with nylon stocking, sawdust and grass seed. The next step operators shaped the product’s eye-glasses. The rest of the process included moulding the face, placing the glasses on the nose, and gluing the buddies eyes in. Next the buddies were sent to the painter who finished off the buddy with a fabric paint mouth. The last step was to place the product on shelving to dry. In the right conditions, this step took about five hours, however, if humidity levels were higher, drying time increased to seven hours.…

    Deviant Act Assignment

The deviant act I chose to experiment with was giving strangers hugs. Naturally, I think the social norm in today’s context is that getting that close and physically touching a complete stranger is not appropriate. My experiment took place at a grocery store in the middle of the afternoon, while plenty of people were shopping. Before hugging anyone I would get an overwhelmed sense of nervousness and an anticipation that I was about to do something wrong, even though I was simply going to give someone a hug. I was able to work up enough courage to test this out twenty times and would wait long enough between people so that the next person would not be expecting anything.…

We see norms in our everyday life but ones stand out more than others. That is exactly what I wanted to do with my experiment, make everyone remember my norm by the humor and awkwardness it brings. To get a better understanding of a norm Simone Isadora Flynn states in her article that “Norms refer to conditions for social relations between groups and individuals, for the structure of society and the difference between societies, and for human behavior in general. Norms are shared rules, customs, and guidelines that govern society and define how people should behave in the company of others.” Although that there are many different types of norms the one I have committed is a folkway “Folkways refer to norms that protect common conventions. Most people in a society follow traditional folkways but failure to conform to them is considered neither illegal nor immoral.”…

For many years researchers have observed that while humans are in a certain social setting they have conducted themselves in accordance to what is acceptable to their group. Humans are social beings who want to be accepted by others and will adapt their behavior according to what the group believes to acceptable. When a member of that group steps out of those parameters they are no longer seen as a member of that group and are frowned upon as being a norm violator. While many humans violate social norms every day, the majority of humans do not. It has been observed that people promote and support social norms to benefit the social good of society; they do it because they want to. It also has been shown that humans are prewired to act negatively to those who take advantage of others when they violate the standards of acceptable social norms. The negative emotions may be the motivation to justify why a certain set of norms are acceptable to their society (Horne, 2007, p.4).…

Giving up a seat to an elderly on a bus, sitting down in your seat silently when the teacher enters the room, and even going to sleep at night and waking up in the morning are all social norms. We might not recognize it, but we follow social norms in our day-to-day activities constantly. Social norms are society-based beliefs on what is acceptable and unacceptable in our society. Breaking a social norm usually leads to confusion or disapproval. It might not be against the legal law but it might be against the social law. Therefore, for my experiment, I decided to break a social norm by bursting out in song on the shuttle to school. My song of choice was I Believe I Can Fly by R. Kelly.…

My experiment about going against a social norm was going shoeless at a local Country Store. I drove my car to the little store down the road where I remove my shoes in my car and I left them there. When I open the door and I stepped out of my car my feet touched a cold wet pavement. I walked hurriedly to the front of the store. I was nervous, as I walked towards the store. I reached the doors and opened them. As I was about to step inside the woman behind the counter looked at me and stated I could not enter the store without any shoes on. There were two people at the register an elderly woman and a younger woman waiting for the woman behind the counter to wait on them. the older woman turned around and gave me a stern…

    Breaking Social Norms

When asked to write a response paper on breaking a social norm, it was very hard for me to choose one that wouldn’t get me arrested or in a lot of trouble. I eventually came up with an idea an experiment to see people’s reactions to something that society considers a social norm. According to society social norms are the rules that we live by that dictate right and wrong behavior within our society. The social norms are also subject to some sort of punishment. In order to understand why my actions were considered to be breaking a social norm, I obtained permission from the general manager at The AMC Sony Imax Movie Theater in Stonecrest Mall to conduct an experiment. I will explain why, ringing cell phones, and telling other patrons the movie, or holding conversations with others is considered breaking a social norm not to mention an embarrassing experience when you get put out of the theater.…

    Social Norm

The social norm that I chose to violate was to go into an elevator and instead of turning around and facing the door upon entering; I had my back to the door and faced the other people in the elevator. In normality a person enters an elevator, pushes the button for their desired floor and turns to face the door to avoid eye contact with strangers, and prepare to exit the elevator. The reason I choose to violate this particular social norm was because I’ve never seen anyone else do it and I was curious as to how people would respond to my deviant behavior. I decided to perform my social norm violation in the elevator at Deaconess Hospital. I picked this location because I know there would be all different types of people coming on the elevator so it would give me a good sample and I could get what I needed out of it.…

"Anything I can help you find?" inquired the chubby female clerk wearing a cheesy red uniform vest complete with "Hi! My name is Amy, How can I assist you?" BS name-tag. Right away I recognize this this to be the limited dialog that clerks are required to resort to when they feel certain shoppers are suspicious, to remind them they're being watched I suppose. I replied smiling, "No, my buddy's in the bathroom, just looking around thanks." the act starting to make me a bit queasy. "Alright then" she creaked, an undertone of distrust. From there I'm left to my own devices, or so they would like me to think. However I know otherwise as I'm using the very same tools that insurance managers and loss prevention employ - namely strategically placed fisheye thief catching mirrors - to keep an eye on the store walker who, after that terse conversation, started following me. Interacting with people who have an inkling that I'm up to no good while cradling nearly $150 worth of stolen goods in my coat, (just under the federal limit mind you) brought on strong feelings of sickness mixed with a rush of adrenaline... maybe I was getting too old for this shit. After skirting my tail, I head for the back entrance which has posted up what looked to be a normal run of the mill alarm system. However having worked this place over several times before, I knew that this was simply cosmetic and no longer functioned properly. My best guess is the store was too broke to repair it, in part due to klepto jack-asses like me and my crew. Most likely they allowed this skeleton of a system to stay standing in hopes that it would deter those that didn't know any better. In fact most of the security equipment in this place was for show. From the dozens of shaded domes mounted in the ceilings where maybe one quarter of them actually held security cameras, to the magnetic tags - or bugs as we coded…
