On April 20, 2010 BP’s Deep Horizon oil rig exploded, spilling more than 200 gallons of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico and killing 11 workers (“11 Facts about the BP Oil Spill”, 2013). BP’s manual and emergency prevention efforts failed, allowing oil to spill into the Gulf for 87 days, resulting in the largest U.S. oil spill in history (Brown, 2013). The spill hurt the company’s reputation and caused a company crisis that involved BP’s stock price to decrease from $57.45 before the disaster to $29.86 in July of 2010 (BP Historical Prices, 2013). In an attempt to save the company’s reputation and mange the crisis, BP created a website, “Gulf of Mexico restoration,” to inform the public of its restoration plans and to acknowledge their actions already taken. BP’s “Gulf of Mexico Restoration” website uses these three strategies to try to repair its reputation: provides a friendly video under the Commitment to the Gulf tab, featuring Fred Lemond, to minimize perceived damage to environment; presents persuasive statements under its Investigation and Legal Proceedings tab to lessen their responsibility and legal liability; and use of charts to display BP’s full amount of claims paid on the Compensation Information tab to publicize that BP has met its commitment to the victims of the disaster. On BP’s website, the company uses a friendly video on the Commitment to the Gulf tab to minimize alleged damage to the environment. BP’s one minute long video focuses on BP’s commitment to the Gulf and its commitment to America. The company uses pictures within this video such as: a clean, gleaming ocean, a family having fun swimming in the Gulf, and a healthy school of fish living in the Gulf. These pictures show that the ocean looks beautiful, is clean enough for people to swim in, and is healthy enough for marine life to survive.
