Boy Scouts Journey
In daily life, I strive to live by values that involve high morals, a desire to serve, and my religious beliefs. In doing so, I’m presented with countless opportunities to volunteer and provide leadership, making a difference in my church, school, community and family.
It mainly began with Boy Scouts of America, one of the largest youth organizations in the nation; I’ve had the privilege of being a member since 2007. Originally joining Cub Scouts, I advanced to Boy Scouts and achieved the highest rank of Eagle. When I started this journey, I was fairly quiet, somewhat shy and reserved, with minimal self-confidence, but scouting changed me.
Advancing through the initial ranks, I became a Patrol Leader overseeing scouts in my patrol and leading the entire troop in weekly skill instruction and games. Progressing to Troop Guide,

My project involved a playground at the elementary school I had previously attended which had an outdoor riding path for children to use with their scooters and tricycles. However, there were cement stairs off one side, allowing students to be easily injured. As a safety measure, I successfully organized the building of a wooden fence and gate in front of the stairs, designing a plan, gathering the materials, and leading a group of scout leaders and scouts in its construction.
Scouting also permitted me to be involved in various camping programs that cater to Boy Scouts. Junior Leadership Training is a three-day adventure that seeks to train boys in various leadership skills. After being an attendee I joined staff, serving as Quartermaster my first year and Senior Patrol Leader the following year. I coordinated the activities of the quartermasters, trainers, instructors, and group leaders during staff training sessions, as well as throughout the three-day camp, making sure all plans were carried out

Throughout my high school years, I maintained various leadership roles. The first of which was serving as a section leader in the marching band for three years. As a section leader, I was the example of how the section should act, present, and conduct them. I was also the captain of the golf and tennis teams, first leading by examples through my actions and then through my playing skills. At my home church, I am the Youth Director providing an example of how to live as a young Christian despite the temptation of peer pressure. While here at JMU, I am currently serving as a mentor at the Harrisonburg and Rockingham County Boys and Girls Club to disadvantaged to youth. Just furthering my education beyond high school is the primary and first example of leadership. The kids at the club can look to me and see that I was once just like them but I’ve pushed through and maybe they can…

The Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) program can be a journey of life changing experiences that can and will build character and leadership. I am currently a freshman and I am enrolled in the JROTC program at Boca Ciega High School, and at first I wasn’t sure what to expect and who I would encounter. Throughout my year so far being a cadet, I am being challenged physically, mentally, and emotionally. But I was able to learn more about teamwork and leadership through this short span. The curriculum consists of practical exercises that directly target an individual’s leadership and character. JROTC has taught me what I would not have learned in any other class in high school. Older cadets have overcome fears and have formed lifelong friendships and unforgettable memories. And I do intend on being like my role models in this program. Overall, they have found that JROTC has molded a sense of character within them just it has for me.…

“I don’t know if all Boy Scouts are gays, they could probably tie the knot in, like, fifty different ways.” Bo Burnham begins his song I’m Bo, Yo with those lyrics, and while it may be fun to make jokes about the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), their short shorts, wacky handshakes, and neckerchiefs all being prime targets, the issue of homosexuality in the organization has always been a serious one.…

Earlier this year, I found myself in a situation that I once believed was a distant and seemingly unachievable goal. I was at my own Eagle Scout award ceremony and I honestly could not believe that I had finally accomplished what only six percent of all Scouts achieve. During the ceremony, I began to look back on the countless hours of work that had gone into my Eagle Project. This contemplation slowly progressed into a reflection of my entire involvement in the Boy Scouts of America and what it has taught me.…

I started cub scouts when I was 7 years old. My dad took me to a meeting and I loved the fun games we played and interesting topics we learned. When I graduated from cub scouts and joined Boy Scouts ,I really enjoyed the camping, hiking and outdoor experiences. Earning First Class was easy. I learned a lot about camping, first aid, orienteering, canoeing and cooking. When I achieved Star, I started to learn how to complete merit badges, some of which took me a lot longer then I thought. Climbing to Life Scout is where I started to slow down and focus on my leadership skills. In my leadership training, I had the privilege of going to NYLT and honing my leadership techniques. During this time, I was accepted into…

I was a camp counselor at Camp Wabikon ‒ a co-ed overnight summer camp located in Temagami, Ontario for children who are 6-15 years of age. Along with teaching Red Cross swimming and lifesaving and Tennis, I was my cabin's 'parent' for six weeks. Therefore, I was present with the children at all times. In essence, I was the leader of my cabin's the physical, social and mental development. The main things I learned were the importance of time management and organization , as I had to plan lessons for swimming and Tennis while taking care of my cabin; conflict resolution between campers; and the ability to plan and foresee events (I had to plan camp-wide events and activities for all campers).…

Scouting was developed at the turn of the 20th century by British officer Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell. After discovering that his men did not know basic first aid or the elementary means of survival in the outdoors, he was prompted to teach them by writing a handbook called Aids to Scouting . Chicago publisher William D. Boyle experienced the working of the book when he was helped by a young man who claimed to be a scout, after refusing to take a tip for helping Boyle. Inspired by this act, Boyle met with Powell and with the same ideals in mind founded the Boy Scouts of America. However, in modern times, the values that the Boy Scout was founded upon has been shaken by the legalization of homosexual members to join the organization.…
