Pavel was a doctor before he was captured by the Nazis. This is revealed when Bruno falls off the swing and injures his leg. Pavel bandages Bruno's leg for him.

What is the name of the boy in the striped pyjamas that Bruno meets and forms a friendship with? Shmuel. Bruno first encounters Shmuel when he goes exploring. Shmuel is sitting alone by the barbed wire fence that surrounds the concentration camp. Shmuel is taken to the family house later in the movie to help clean the glasses because he has small hands.
