Boy By Diana Son Character Analysis
In the play Boy by Diana Son the artists were trying to express how truly freeing and gratifying it is to find oneself, regardless of the gender roles and stereotypes placed by society. Throughout the play you see how the artists, especially the lead actress who played the boy (Kelsey Richards) use various scenarios to accomplish their goals of what it means to be you and not a gender. The artists try to convey to you that not only is it okay to be independent, but the importance of it and hopefully in turn leave you with an imprint however small or lasting. Nonetheless, the effectiveness of the artists in accomplishing their purpose was achieved, but it was done in a very inconsistent and confusing manner, leaving the play to be lacking and not fully satisfying. First off, Boys parents, sisters, childhood friends, and neighbors all played their parts well, but it was done so in such an average fashion that it felt rather dull and predictable. I understand the importance of their parts in showing how society has these stereotypical views and the effect it causes, but it could have still been done in a more creative way. However, it was refreshing to see that not all Boy’s sisters were …show more content…
The first act was well done, it sets the stage well, the humor was more amusing, and was done at a more reasonable pace. However, some things were left up in the air, like if Charlotte was being sexually abused by her mother and what type of relationship was shared between her and the Boy. These questions are only more profound and even forgotten during the second act. The second part of the play felt kind of rushed and the humor became quite repetitive and dull. But most of all I felt that this is where the purpose of the play cracked a little. The emotions, energy, and strength felt at the beginning were greatly diminished by the second act, which kind of detracted its worth as well as creating a smaller imprint in one’s

The day was sunny and bright as I entered the iron arch. Rocky River Ranch it read. Little did I know that after walking through that arch my life would never be the same again. I was only 12 years old and I thought I was simply going to another summer camp. Rocky River Ranch is a little slice of heaven in the middle of the hill country in Wimberley, TX. I have grown up here and made lifelong friends. Through this all-girls camp I’ve also learned independence and gained a deeper appreciation for friendship and sisterhood. As an only child, the feeling of camaraderie with others in a familial sense is not one that I felt. While I had fellow female cousins, I never had true sisters. Rocky River Ranch is a special place where I learned the importance…

In this short story we meet Sister and four members of her family. The Protaganist of the story ia Sister , the oldest child of two girls, and her younger sister Stella-Rondo is the family favorite. It seems everything Sister wants, Stella-Rondo gets. Sister says that Stella-Rondo stole her boyfriend for it was Sister who had been dating Mr. Whitaker first until Stella- Rondo, being the jealous person she was told him that Sister was "one-sided," unequal on both sides. And that in-turn ended the relationship.Sisters real problem is that she is extreamly jelous of Stella-rondo. And she, Sister, at times can be a little selfish. For instance at the end Sister says to herself, "And if Stella-Rondo should come to me this minute, on bended knee, and attempt to explain the incidents of her life with Mr. Whitaker, I'd simply put my fingers in both my ears and refuse to listen" (153). That statement alone defines her jealously and selfishness towards her sister, because it seems Mr. Whitaker is the only thing she is really upset about for she makes no mention about any of the other family members,…

Manhood is earned not given, “A man’s his job.” The men in this play are not real men at all. Levene tells Williamson how “a man’s his job” and implies that since Williamson takes orders from Mitch and Murray all day, he isn’t a real man. Williamson, being the boss of everyone, should not have his employees see him as a child and not a man. Williamson’s name is a symbol for him being a boy. Having ‘son’ at the end of his name symbolizes that he is more of a boy than a man. To have the qualities of a child in the business work place is a downfall.…

The story is about a boy called Arnold, he is 9 years old. It says in the text “Arnold went into the barn” which makes me think that he has grown up on a farm, he lives there with his parents, and his bigger brother Eugene. Arnold is a normal boy, with an interest in weapons, like many boys have. I’m guessing Arnold sees his brother like quite an idol, because in the beginning of the text, he is so eager for his brother to go pick peas with him (“get up, you said you’d pick peas with me”). It would have meant nothing for him to pick peas, if it was not because it was time with his brother. When Arnold shoots Eugene, I do not know if it actually is on purpose, because it is quite clear that the mother cares a lot more for Eugene than for Arnold. Maybe he is jealous, I know the 3th person narrator says it is by accident, but I still have my doubt.…

Confusion filled my face as I watched them cry, then laugh, then sigh heavily, then cry some more. It was the same thing every time we came to visit. I asked Katie, my sister, and Bailey, my cousin, “what’s so great about boys?” they responded with the most irritating phrase to a nine year old; “you’ll understand when you’re older.” They would talk for hours about how amazing boys were, and then about how awful they were. I did not understand it.…

Many people think that boys in our culture today are brought up to define their identities through heroic individualism and competition, particularly through separation from home, friends, and family in an outdoors world of work and doing. Girls, on the other hand, are brought up to define their identities through connection, cooperation, self-sacrifice, domesticity, and community in an indoor world of love and caring. This view of different male and female roles can be seen throughout children's literature. Treasure Island and The Secret Garden are two novels that are an excellent portrayal of the narrative pattern of "boy and girl" books.…

    Gender Socialization

Family is the first and most crucial agent in the development of gender towards a child. Family teaches children all of the fundamentals of gender, and what society is expected of them. Roles are segregated by the basis of sex. Even during early years of a child’s life, parents demonstrate how society indirectly looks down upon femininity. For instance, girls are often associated with the color pink and dolls, while boys are associated with the color blue and trucks. However, if a girl were to play with trucks, it’s not viewed as extreme as a boy playing with dolls. It would not be surprising for a young boy playing with a doll to hear commentary from peers such as, “Are you a girl?” or “Are you gay?” In addition, if a boy was being sensitive, or crying, he might also be called a “little girl.” This only deters boys from engaging in these…

    Boys

In the early stages of the boys lives they feel the need to show off their masculinity and they do this by tormenting their little sister. In Rick Moody's "Boys", it states, "not long after which boys gig a hole in the back yard and bury their younger sister's dolls two feet down, so that she will never find these dolls and these dolls will rot in hell" (Moody 196). The Boys relate their sisters dolls to femininity and they feel the need to show off their power by destroying them. Without realizing that they're hurting their sister they do it anyways because they felt the need to show off their masculinity. This shows how at a young age boys can be so reckless toward a family member and not care about how they feel and how they are affecting their lives. Young kids in today's society are very destructive and do not care about other peoples feelings. Later down the road in life boys come to see all the bad they've done and are full of regret.…

It seems that all the years of their lives they always had to fight and protect themselves from men. In my opinion the way the stories are told it seems as if the men they were involved with were demanding and didn’t like that they were independent females. One major incident that sticks with this family every year with every generation is the story about the loss of one of my uncle’s father. Everyone knows the story to the point in very vivid detail. It’s an incident that is sad, but at the same time had a happy ending.…
