Creating and implementing effective lessons for a literacy learner who is struggling with reading and writing takes much effort and appropriate resources. Throughout the Literacy Development course, I have gained much insight and resources that have become valuable tools in addressing students’ literacy needs. The article describes, in brief, the reading intervention program known as Reading Recovery. Reading Recovery is a non-profit program which, contrary to the belief of some school administrators, is more cost effective because of its short duration and its long term gains for students. The goal of the program is described as providing accelerated learning (without exception) for first grade children who are falling far below their classmates in reading and writing. Completing the 12-20-week program allows students to progress and catch up to their peers, moving from the bottom of the class to within the class average. The purpose of this study is to find ways to help a child improve their reading test scores. How is it that a child who reads two grades above their level cannot perform well when it comes to taking state assessments? Is it the teacher or is the child playing around when it comes to taking tests? Maybe the child can read really well but does not comprehend what they read and they get nervous during the test, which would also cause them to score low. This child was chosen because he reads at least two to three levels above his grade, but on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test he scored below what he was expected to score. I noticed that he had the most trouble in the area of Reading Application. This area consists of main idea, identifying the author’s purpose, making inferences, cause and effect, and compare and contrast. Tutoring sessions will be used to work with each of the specific parts of reading application to see if the student can improve his test scores. When you hear the word literacy what comes to mind? Do you think of words or school or horrible comprehension tests? When I hear the word literacy none of the above is what comes to my mind. I think of when I was young, no more than five, and I would sit on my grandmother’s warm lap wrapped up in her arms that seemed to protect me from any and everything while she read to me.
