American Author Zane Gray once stated “I hate birthdays.” Perhaps he said this because he has had a bad experience with birthdays. Maybe he simply doesn’t like celebrating something as frivolous as a birthday. Personally, I concur with Mr. Gray’s statement, I too, hate birthdays. Even though the vast majority of the population enjoy their birthday and most likely consider it their favorite holiday, birthdays do not appeal to me however because of, my past natal day experiences, the annoyance of the annual overhyped celebrations, and my fear of being disappointed again.…

Our family’s favorite tradition is summer vacation road trips. No doubt, our vacations turn out to be a success each and every year. Throughout my childhood and into my teenager years, we have gone from the beaches in Florida to the valleys in California. The most memorable one I could recall was our vacation to Disneyworld in Orlando, FL in 2004. My mother wanted to give me the birthday of my dreams and that is exactly what she did. She told me that for this birthday I was not going to be able to have a huge party like I had wanted, so I threw a fit. I started to yell and scream and cry until my mom calmed me down. She told me that birthdays do not have to be extravagant in order for it to be a birthday, but as long as you have your family surrounded by you be fine. When my party came I walked into my back yard and saw that all of my family was there and everything I had wanted was too, I was so overjoyed my mom couldn’t contain me. I ran up to her and gave her the biggest hug ever, she told " Happy birthday sweetie! I love you."…

Birthdays for the teenagers are celebrated on a smaller scale with a closer group of friends. If a girl is turning sixteen, a big sweet sixteen party is held with dancing and music and the party is held at a rented venue where lots of guests are invited and they dress up as though they are going to the prom. Otherwise the teenagers and their friends will go to a restaurant, to the movies or just have birthday cake at home. Birthday parties are not held for adults unless it is a milestone birthday such as 21, 30, 40 or 50 that is being…
