Born Leaders vs Made Leaders
Some people believe that leaders are born with the necessary qualities that make them successful as a leader. While others believe that leadership, like many other similar characteristics, can be learned and developed through life. For me, I think much of the debate depends on how you define leadership.

If leadership means having an ability and desire to inspire and influence others then I can see the argument that leaders are born with leading qualities. For example when I see my sister using her inherent ability to influence our younger brother (and sometimes our parents) to do the things she wants them to do.

If leadership means being courageous and willing to speak out for the betterment of those around you, I would think that leaders do not have to be born as such. I have seen people who consider themselves introverts and overall followers become successful leaders when faced with an issue they are passionate about. If we define leadership as having a certain intelligence, creativity and/or drive, then I am back to believing that it’s a trait you’re born with, but you may or may not continue to develop that trait through your life.

We all have areas of our lives where we have talent and tendency for success. If this is also an area you feel passionate about, you may exude qualities that are absent from other areas of your life. So while you may not be a natural born leader you can certainly overcome many obstacles and develop a desire and ability to lead when you are inspired to do

In my opinion, I believe that leaders are more effective when they are not necessarily born, but are properly trained and appointed to a specific position. Through my research on this topic I received a better understanding of what emergent leadership verses appointed leadership is. Emergent leaders are employees who began to take on tasks voluntarily to help others complete their tasks more effectively. They also encourage consensus among coworkers through their leadership abilities. This type of leadership is distinguished by the leader proving his or her abilities before being formally given a leadership title. Emergent leaders have the advantage of showing in advance of a promotion that they are the person who can handle the job. This type…

Some people are naturally born as leaders whereas others take a long and treacherous journey through life and become a star leader. I certainly wasn’t born into this world as a leader and nor do I consider myself a picture perfect leader at this point by any means. This does not stop me from knowing that I can become a Schulich leader and better the current generation and future ones to come.…

Nothing happens without leadership. Nothing changes without leadership. Nothing develops without leadership. Nothing improves without leadership. Nothing is corrected without leadership. Everyone, everywhere, every time is always being led. Leadership is perpetually exercised daily whether by a politician, priest, parent, boss or teacher. Leaders are not born. They are made through a never ending process of self study, education, training and experience backed up with a strong desire and willpower. They grow out of opportunities and projects.…

The age-old question continues to raise its ugly head: Are leaders born to lead, or are they made? Does Leadership DNA exist? We often point to one person or the other and say, “Now, he’s a leader,” without giving a lot of thought to how this person became a leader in the first place. Sometimes it is easy to simply conclude that some of us have the leadership gene and some of us do not. Those who do get to lead, while those who do not are forever assigned to the sidelines while leaders have all the fun, make all the decisions, and cover themselves in glory. This comes as rather unsettling news for those of us who fear we may get the opportunity to lead. What hope do we have that we can ever aspire to lead people, teams, companies, organizations, even our children?…

As Elle Woods from Legally Blonde once said, “It is with passion, courage of conviction, and strong sense of self that we take our next steps into the world.” This rhetoric resonated with me as I pushed myself to be a leader at a lower caliber. I think that these are developed in an individual through the environment that they first experienced leadership and with socialization in leadership. Also, there are just some instances of natural borne leadership and that is just as valid. Overall, leadership is easier than it actually is. The title and power is great, but being passionate and transparent about your goals will easily establish confidence and conviction — showing that leadership is attainable for anyone as long as they keep these three traits within…

There are varying opinions about leadership. Nonetheless, there are many who believe leadership is exemplified by certain traits, which are presumed to make a person an effective leader. These characteristics include things such as attractiveness, intelligence, expressiveness, and being able to speak well. These individuals are often identified as a 'born leader.' However, the idea of leadership also includes a process, or the leader's actual performance. If one focuses on process, rather than being concerned with personal characteristics, leadership can be taught.…

According to Avolio (1999) some people are born to move and shake the world. Their blessings: high energy, exceptional intelligence, extreme persistence, self confidence and a yearning to influence others. He also stated that after 50 years of collecting data on the topic, most psychologists believe that leadership qualities are innate or genetic and thus impossible to learn. However research has proven that leadership skills can be developed and mastered. For example, our parents can instill us with the tools and drive to lead and set challenging goals for us to accomplish but we could also develop good leadership skills from attending any educational institution.…

I believe that we are born with the traits to become great leaders. Leadership can come in different forms and from all backgrounds. Having all the right conditions in place will not guarantee leadership. I have come across leaders with all the right conditions who failed by performance when given the opportunity. I have also come across the uneducated with no support system who becomes business owners and community leaders. First, leadership is a group phenomenon; there can be no leaders without followers. Leadership always involves interpersonal influence or persuasion. Second,…
