Testing the Effectiveness of a New Cough Medicine
ANSWERS to EXPERIMENTAL METHOD PRACTICE WORKSHEET
This is a reply to a student’s attempt so you can see errors in thinking as well as see the correct answer.

Good job. But a few technical matters need to be cleared up. Items are correct unless explanatory response appears in blue.
An experiment tests the effectiveness of a new cough medicine by giving one group of subjects the new medicine and giving another group of subjects the old brand of cough medicine.
Ho (hypothesis)- The effectiveness of a new cough medicine is better than that of an old medicine.
IV –New cough medicine IV is a variable so it ust be stated in terms that show how it varies. New medicine is only half. A more accurate description would be “brand” or “amount” of medicine. Remember definition of IV is a variable that the Experimenter changes in a systematic way.
DV - Effectiveness
Exp grp –subjects given new medicine
Control grp- subjects given old medicine

Ho (hypothesis)-Children who have watched an aggressive-filled film will play more aggressively than children who have watched an exciting but non-aggressive film
IV –The aggressive filled film Type of film; level of aggression in film; content of film. The systematically changed “variations” are aggressive-filled and non-aggressive films.
DV- The children who watched the aggressive film will play more aggressively DV is a variable, not a group (“children”); level of aggression in play is what is “measured” which is definition of DV

The OTC brand name that I chose for this assignment is Vick’s NyQuil Cold & Flu. The generic version I am comparing this to, is Equaline nighttime cold & flu relief, which is the Albertson’s generic version. Both Vick’s Nyquil Cold & Flu and Equaline nighttime cold & flu relief, have the same exact active ingredients. These ingredients include: acetaminophen (650mg), Dextromethorphan HBr (30mg), and Doxylamine succinate (12.5mg). The price of the brand named, Vick’s NyQuil was $9.99. The price for the albertson’s generic version, Equaline nighttime cold & flu relief was $3.99. Knowing that these over-the-counter medications contain the same active ingredients, I would spend less money and purchase the Equaline nighttime…

Most parents understand the importance that behaviour plays in their children’s life. Television, games, music and even food have all been used as reasons for children growing up to commit aggression in their adult life. Throughout the years the media have reported extreme cases of children showing aggressive behaviour and given various reasons for these behaviours. In 1961, a scientist named Albert Bandura performed an experiment called the Bobo Doll Experiment to try and understand these behaviours better. His aim was to show all behaviour was learned through imitation and copying rather than inherited through genes. Below is a description of how the experiment was carried out, with detail of the results obtained and how these results can be useful in the parenting of your…

In the early 1960s Albert Bandura conducted his famous “Bobo Doll” experiments, in which children were shown videos of someone attacking a plastic clown known as a Bobo doll (Isom, 1998). Many of the children exposed to these videos later imitated the same violence they had seen demonstrated in the video and continued to reproduce that violent behavior even months later (Isom, 1998). These results led Bandura and others to conclude that the children had learned the behavior from the video and were modeling their behavior accordingly. Today many people continue to claim that exposure to violence in the media will invariably lead to similarly aggressive behavior in children. However, by the time the average child graduates elementary school, he will have witnessed more than 8,000 murders and 800,000 violent acts on network television (Feldman, 2013, p. 188). Clearly, not all children who view these acts become violent and aggressive, so there must be mitigating factors at work. While excessive exposure to media violence can be detrimental, there are far more important factors that influence a child’s behavior and, when properly monitored, media can have a beneficial impact as well.…
