Borderland languages
As Author Malcolm Gladwell once said, "We learn by example and by direct experience because there are real limits to the adequacy of verbal instruction." Teaching by example goes a long way, and really helps children grow and learn. A bilingual teacher is able to communicate effectively with students while at the same time opening the door to learning a second language. This allows the students to be comfortable with their language rather feeling forced to learn a new language. This supportive type of learning and communicative environment allows the students to embrace their culture and language while moving on to learning a second language. It sets the stage for learning when teachers respond to students who speak borderland languages by allowing them to write, speak, and express themselves in their native tongue and by the teacher's ability to know and understand their language.
The teacher knowing and understanding a child's borderland language will make them comfortable, and let them know that it's okay to speak that borderland language. These children who speak borderland languages should not have to feel ashamed of their native tongue and culture. This is the language their parents and family speak. A person's language is a part of who they are as a person. They think, dream, and feel in that language. The teacher will be showing the students by example that it's okay to speak their language while at the same time exposing them to a new, second language. The teacher can share her or his own culture, family, dreams, and background to demonstrate how they grew up with English but wanted to learn and speak a second language. They can communicate any difficulties or obstacles they met while learning the students' native language and the advantages of being bilingual. Since the teacher knows and understands the borderland language and also speaks and teaches in English the students will learn English much faster. Being around the teacher and other students
