The author has written 3 books, the books I chose is her newest. She had also won awards, such as the young reader's choice award. What I like about this book is that it has a lot of mystery in it, such as in the beginning when the police said if he can solve the mystery, he will get a reward.…

In Annie Dillard’s book, An American Child; chapter two describes the fear she had as a child, of the night shadows that would appear on her walls. Dillard was five years old and shared a bedroom with her little sister Amy, who was two at the time. When Dillard describes her little sister sleeping, I can picture her clearly in my mind. Dillard writes; “even at two she composed herself attractively with her sheet folded tidily, under her outstretched arm, her head laid lightly on an unwrinkled pillow, her thick curls spread evenly.” (21) Another wonderful example of her descriptive writing is when she is telling of the “thing” that she is so afraid of at night…

The story of Nightjohn begins with a 12 year old girl, named Sarny, who lives under the enslavement of her cruel owner, Clel Waller. Sarny’s main duties on the plantation are to serve at the dinner table, spit tobacco on roses to prevent bugs, and convey secretive letters between Mr. Waller’s wife and Dr. Chamberlaine. Soon enough, Nightjohn arrives and takes Sarney under his guidance, in exchange for tobacco, while he secretly teaches her how to read and write. The author, David Sedaris, uses setting to set the mood of the story. In the second paragraph, he gave you an image of being alone in the dark country. He uses this to foreshadow how he believes the Tomkey’s live, in the dark, alone. “It was speculated that just as a blind man develops a keener sense of hearing, the family must somehow compensate for their loss.” The author uses this simile excellently to state how he feels about loss. He thinks when you feel loss you must make up for it in some other way. What he does not realize is that he feels a loss himself. His loss is not having friends. Instead of making friends with the Tomkey’s, he would rather observe them like a television show. This is how he compensates for his loss. We can learn…

P.9 -the yellow star? Oh well, what of it? You dont dies of it. . . . (Poor Father! Of what then did you die?)I think that the yellow star that the Jews were forced to wear, brought up on page 9 of Night, is a very important part of this book. First off, this quote foreshadows his fathers death later in the book. It means that though his thought being identified as a Jew wouldnt harm him, but in the end being Jewish is what killed him. I think this is very important. It shows that even though people knew of the war and what was going on to Jews they could not comprehend that the fact that they are Jewish is what would eventually kill them.…

“I became A-7713. After that I had no other name” (Wiesel). Imagine living in a place where you were called a number instead of your name. In Night, by Elie Wiesel, he writes that this is an everyday occurrence in his memoir about living in concentration camps. This novel tells readers exactly how it was living in a concentration camp at every hour of the day. Wiesel explains his journey from days before he was taken, all the way to the day the war ended and he was able to get out of the concentration camp. Originally, Elie wrote an 800 page story in Yiddish, but one of his kin edited it making it into the story it is today. Overall, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the Holocaust or curious about what it was like.…

In addition to this reader-response method of writing, MacLeod transforms The Vastness of the Dark into a surprisingly vibrant story that progresses in stages of hue and colour, as opposed to what is suggested by its title. However, MacLeod does happen to use several references to darkness, such as the scenario concerning James and his father being trapped within one of the mining catacombs. James reminisces on this dire situation with a vocabulary finely tuned to the theme of darkness, stating that he and his father were “chilled together in the dampness of the dark” (36). MacLeod also describes materials and images associated with working in a coal mine, specifically, as he includes references to the metal drills, the blackened faces of the miners, and the hues of the houses and sky embodying a sort of grey and black aura (33). As James travels further away from this small, dingy town, however, MacLeod begins to incorporate brighter colours into his narrative. One of the…

We have all heard of the age old saying, “There are only two types of people that exist in a time or war and crisis, those who survive and those who die.” Night is just an example of this that we see down on paper. Night is an autobiography written by Elie Wiesel. It is a true story about events that happened in his life. The intentions of this book was not to make the reader feel good. The author was not writing a story for a family to sit down, drink some coffee and read together to enjoy a good book. He is expressing his experiences and what he felt by writing it down. He shows us what he felt thought the story. The story contains many elements of recession like the death of innocent people and of his family members, shows the limits and boundaries humans will go to survive and the absolute evil of man.…

Elie Wiesel's book night tell us the story of the Holocaust that killed so many Jews and scarred the one that did survive for life. Elie Wiesel just so happens to be one of the luckier ones who actually survived being beat, seeing others being beat and killed, seeing babies being thrown in the air and used as a target practice. Children as well as women and feeble men were thrown in pits of fire, most of them alive, although some of them were dead. He even saw is own father being tortured, struggling until his death. Jews didn't have any rights, privileges or control over their own lives. Adolf Hitler and the Red Army (the Germans) took over with violence, weapons, and cold hearts. It is relevant to today because something very important was going on during this time in the United States—segregation. It was almost like the Holocaust but one important factor is what makes the Holocaust very different. During this time the Jewish people did not realize that the conditions were getting worse and worse as the days went on. Their government, the Jewish Council, told their people that there was nothing to worry about and things would soon get better, but they were very wrong. Things only got tougher but the Jews did not want to believe it. What makes this different from segregation in the United States is the minorities, Blacks in particular, knew that things were only going to get worse if they didn't do something about it. This is why political figures such as Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Malcolm X and even President John F. Kennedy were some of the people who stood up for injustice, and segregation, a time when no one other than whites were accepted in the southern parts of the country. MLK and JFK and Malcolm X were assassinated for standing up for what was right.…

I choose the memoir Night by Elie Wiesel. It is a book about his experience, and also his family’s experiences throughout the holocaust. This book follows Elie and some of his family and friends from shortly before the holocaust all the way to his first moments being a free man. It describes his memories, his hopes, and his dreams. At certain points he almost gave up but he continued, survived, and got his horrifying message out to the world so people can look back on one of the worst parts of human history. The memoir genre feels like the author is just talking to you normally and telling you a story about a certain memory in his life. He really wants you to connect with the people he talks about and especially his family. This book is easily understandable if you have any idea of what the holocaust was. The way he writes this memoir, it is easy for you to get into the book and really start to see what he was seeing at the time. He has a couple main themes like his relationship with his father and darkness. However unlike a normal book, I feel he didn’t focus on the themes as much as he did as just getting the story out naturally. Books that usually are the memoir genre are about a big event in someone else’s life like a million little pieces, or about an event that affected everyone’s life like Night and the holocaust. I personally like memoirs over biography’s because they are more concise and have a narrower target audience. When I go to a library and pick up a memoir, I can usually tell if I’m going to like it or not because it tells you exactly what the author is going to talk about. If I read a biography, I could like the part of it that was interesting but not liked the parts I didn’t want to read about. An example is if I would want to read about the holocaust. I would rather read a memoir about the holocaust specifically than a biography that talk about the person’s life more before and after the event. I was fairly familiar with this genre before reading…
