“All Quiet On The Western Front” by Erich Maria Remarque is the book being analyzed in this paper. “All Quiet On The Western Front” is a book about the life and times of Paul Baumer who enlisted into the German Army in World War I with his classmates. The young men become enthused and eager soldiers but, their way of life falls apart during their first attack on their trench. Through the years of pain and sacrifice Paul holds true to his word to fight against the hatred and obscurity that puts the young men of his generation against each other in the ways of war, in which Paul hopes to survive.
Erich Maria Remarque whose real name was Erich Paul Remark was born July 22nd, 1989, in Osnabruck, Germany he was the only son in his family. His father had the profession of being a bookbinder. Erich came from a poor family which moved many times during his childhood. Erich began writing later in his teenage years and went on to attend the University of Munster where he was planning to pursue a profession as an Elementary school teacher. Toward the end of World War I, he was drafted into the army and while in the hospital suffering from injuries wrote his first novel, “The Dream Room”, soon after this he changed his last name back to its original French spelling and continued on to have an illustrious career as an author, and pursued other professions such as salesman and a racecar driver. He passed away on September 25th, 1970 (Notable Biographies).
The thesis of this work would be that Paul is the voice of the “lost generation”. In being that he is the “it-guy” or standard of this generation that was lost and led into a war by draft and not choice and had to go through the horrid and treacherous war that was upon them.
