But in reality, Boo ends up being a good person. Accordingly, he gave Jem and Scout many small little gifts via the knothole in the tree. These gifts inlcuded “Indian Pennies”, gum, and small carvings of Jem and Scout themselves. Additionally, he went out of his way to help the kids. When Jem was trying to escape from the place after attempting a glance through the window, his pants got caught in the fence, and he was forced to pull out without them. Surprisingly, he found that when he went back for them, they were mended (albeit not perfectly) and laid neatly across the fence. Also, the morning after Scout witnessed the conflagration that consumed Miss Maudie’s house (ironically on a very chilly winter’s night), Atticus saw that she had a…

Outside, the greens and browns run past me like dogs chasing cats as the tracks flew by like little birds. The train nosily rattles underneath my seat, rumbling along with the rocks. I am on train from Maycomb County back to Meridian, Mississippi. This summer’s been good to me in Maycomb. When I first arrived in Maycomb, it was a disappointment, all I found was boredom. Although, I changed my mind the day I met a funny-named boy who had soft brown hair and his sister, who lived in breeches. They were called, Jem and Scout from the loving Finch Family. The Finches consist of the couple, Atticus and his dead wife, their children, Jem and Scout along with Calpurnia who works for them.…

I think I’m beginning to understand why Boo Radley’s stayed shut up in the house all this time. It’s because he wants to stay inside.”’ (301). With this statement from Jem one can clearly infer that Jem has overcome his previous invisions and fantasies of Boo Radley, and has come to a clearly, more realistic idea of what actually is occuring with Boo. Jem can now realize that the things people do are none of his business and if they want to stay inside, such as Boo does, then they can and Jem cannot do anything about it. Jem can also be seen as a fully matured young man when he defends Scout in the struggle against Bob Ewell. Jem and Scout are ambushed, and Jem takes initiative and does all he can to protect his younger sister. Jem tells Scout to run and as they run they are pulled to the ground by Bob. Jem overcomes, picks himself up and pounces upon Mr. Ewell so as to save his one and only sister. Jem could have been expedient, run away and left Scout to fend for herself, but he had attained his immaculate goal of maturity and does all he can to assist in the epic battle between himself, Scout and the ravaging Bob Ewell. As one can infer from the several examples that are displayed from Jem and Scout proceeding their catalytic maturity experiences, they have worked for, and attained ultimate maturity for…

Because the narration is not as straightforward in the film, the film seems to shift more to Jem's experiences. For example, Jem finds all the articles in the tree. Jem accompanies Atticus to tell Helen Robinson of her husband's death. Jem is left alone to watch his sister. Scout is still an important character, but the film expands on her brother's role.…

‘With this in mind, I faced Cecil Jacobs in the school yard the next day. “You gonna take that back, boy?”… I would let Atticus down.’ With her pride at stake, Scout was about to get into another fight, but then refrained at the last minute and thought about Atticus. She knew if she continued Atticus would be very disappointed and sad. This encapsulates Scout’s faithfulness to her father; she wanted him to be proud of her. Alternatively, Jem cares for Atticus in a slightly different manner. “Scout, try to not antagonize Aunt, hear?” Atticus’ remarks were still rankling, which made me miss the request in Jem’s question. My… now for my edification and instruction.’ (pp. 151 – 152) This demonstrates Jem’s consideration and love for Atticus. Jem really worries about Atticus and so he tells Scout to not disturb him. Jem is aware of what Atticus is going through and doesn’t want Scout, on top of it all, to cause him more distress. Aunt Alexandra tells Jem and Scout they have to act like Finches. Initially, Atticus agrees with her, but says differently while he puts his children to bed, that “I don’t want you to remember it. Forget it.” (178). Atticus doesn’t want himself or his kids to act like the rest of their family. He likes everyone to think for themselves and be their own person. Again, Atticus is genuine when Heck is telling Atticus that Jem did not kill Bob Ewell, but in his shock, Atticus doesn’t believe him and thinks Tate is trying to cover up what Jem did. Atticus tells Mr. Tate that, “I don’t live that way.” (365). Atticus is an honest person, and he always tries to be honest and outright. He doesn’t act different around certain people or in certain social settings. As the Finches’ neighbor Miss Maudie Atkinson says, “Atticus Finch is the same in his house as he is on the public streets.” (61).…
