Bonner Scholarship Essay
First and foremost, I am a perfectionist and aim for the best in everything I do. Yet imperfections or mishaps don’t stress me out in the slightest, instead they motivate me to find what works and quickly rebound. My experiences in Trenton and Lawrenceville give me a dual perspective that is directly applicable to the service Bonner does. In having a small but religious family I’ve become very flexible in collaborating with multiple personalities on behalf of many charity and fundraising projects with my church.
My dedication and creativity are aspects of my personality that I would bring with me to

One of the reasons I aim to become an educator is to influence future generations positively and early enough so they reach their full potential regardless of any setbacks. The Bonner program would not only help me solidify my career path but provide me with such an expansive set of new skills and experiences that you can only understand once you are in the program.
Yet the Bonner program isn’t just a network or a leadership development initiative, instead it is an opportunity that not only provides an education through scholarship but through hands-on service. The amount of personal growth going on throughout the entire program is inspiring and I’ve even seen it though my own sister. She loves what she does and all of her great stories are about Bonner and the family she has.

In summer of 2011 I made a decision that would change my life to move from Southern California to Atlanta, Georgia. I was laid off, bored, and wanting a change in my life and with the support of my family and friends I made the move by myself. The first few months down there were a culture shock; I had no friends and no job. One I received a phone call to work for a nonprofit organization called “The Center for Family Resource.” From November 2011 to October 2012 I got a crash course lesson into what the human service field was about. Assisting families with children struggling with rent, food, and the transitional housing project the Center for family Resource has been an instrumental part of the community since its inception in 1960. Working for the company made a person like myself who grew up in a middle-class type family very fortunate and blessed from where I came from.…

Nonetheless, through the challenges, I discovered strengths in myself. I have always been mainly a follower because I am easy to get along with. At times this quality has hurt me, but during my time at the camp I was transformed into a leader. The group of volunteers I was working with were not as motivated or passionate as they could have been. I could not do all the work myself, so I took my stand as a leader and motivated the dietary staff team to do their best work. I used my voice to delegate tasks to efficiently get them done, as well as pushing with perseverance when I was beyond the point of exhaustion.…

My experiences serving others have exposed me to the issues my community faces and have shown me that I can make a difference. My first experience working with underserved populations in my community was serving food at Union Station Homeless Services’ Thanksgiving Dinner in the Park in high school. This made me step out of my comfort zone and interact with a group I was unfamiliar with. Through serving food and interacting with homeless and low-income families, I saw that my small actions could brighten one’s day. This inspired me to start Heal L.A. at UCLA with some of my classmates. We wanted to help the significant homeless population surrounding our campus in any way possible. What started as buying meals and conversing with them has grown…
