Laboratory Exercise
Bones, Joints and Muscle Movements

Aim:
To investigate the movements that, occur within synovial joints when participating in a game of Olympic Handball.

Method and Materials
Students will be handed this laboratory.
While participating in the game of handball the students will take note of joint movements and bones involved in those movements. While participating in the game of handball the students will take note of the common body movement and then try to identify which muscle response allows these movements to take place. Students will complete the laboratory write up, including questions and hand the laboratory exercise in before the commencement of the next Physical Education lesson.

Discussion Questions
1. Draw a detailed diagram of a long bone and label correctly. a. Medullary Cavity
b. Articular Cartilage
c. Epiphyseal Plate

2. For the following joints;
1. Elbow
2. Shoulder
3. Knee
a. List the bones in each of these joints.
b. List the type of synovial joint for each joint identified. (In the case of the elbow joint there are two synovial joints present)

3. Label the diagram below

4. Flexion is when a muscle is getting shorter and extension is when a muscle is getting longer. List which muscle (triceps or biceps) is in flexion and which muscle (triceps or biceps) is in extension when the player is throwing the ball? 5.
