“One study reports that at age thirteen, 53% of American girls are ‘unhappy with their bodies’. This grows to 78% by the time girls reach seventeen” (Body 1).The growing figure of women with body dissatisfaction correlates with the rising statistics of girls developing eating disorders. The source of this unhappiness comes from, “images in the media today [that] project an unrealistic and even dangerous standard of feminine beauty that can have a powerful influence on the way women view themselves. From the perspective of the mass media, thinness is idealized and expected for women to be considered attractive’” (Serdar 2).The media's portrayal of gaunt images must cease. Food, attire and even toy companies have standards to what they use for advertising and how an individual looks. A fair example would be the toy company Mattel and their famous toy, Barbie. The original Barbie Doll has a slim figure, a model height, platinum blonde hair and tan skin, yet this doll is one of the most popular toys given to young children. As of January 2016 Mattel introduced new barbies with different body shapes, which will increase diversity in the toy industry. A copious amount of adults and physicians “have complained that too many dolls, models and even clothing companies conform to an extremely thin, even anorexic body type...” (Abrams 6). To address this rising controversy in society, “Mattel unveiled curvy, petite and tall versions of its iconic fashion doll whose unrealistically thin shape has attracted criticism for decades”(Abrams 2). The fact that Mattel’s Barbie is being revolutionized after so many years with that body, just stands to show how other companies can change their standards too. A trifling amount of clothing companies have started to recognize the growing industry for plus-size women, while others have avoided the trend. Millions of apparel brands lack a section for plus size clothing, and a few popular industries currently brought about change. If parents around the globe can positively strengthen the way that girls see bodies then the figure of women trying to lose weight will decrease, and the number of young ladies with congenial body image should increase. As young women go through puberty, bodies change and one may not know how to deal with the mental and physical effects. Fear of further weight gain could develop, and girls might attempt to lose weight (Serdar 2). By encouraging girls not to compare themselves, and to see the uniqueness in all shapes, self-image in a righteous manner can rise.     Women today are constantly bombarded by media in one form or another. It could take the form of a fashion magazine, a favourite blog, a TV commercial, or a myriad of other sources.     According to Prah, there is a complicated combination of biological, psychological and social factors that cause eating disorders, and our culture continues to endorse thinness (3). Over time there has been a shift in the way that society views being thin. Starting at the end of the Middle Ages, “women who fasted were thought to possess evil spirits and were accused of being witches bent upon destroying the Catholic Church” (12). Next, in the 17th and 18th centuries, when women were too thin, they were thought of as being “victims of poor health” (12). Then in the 1940s and the 1950s, the full figured woman became the ideal (13). When Twiggy, a famous model who stood 5’9” and weighed 90 pounds, was growing up in the 1950s, she hated her body. She wanted to “look like Brenda Lee, very curvy and round” (Abagond), because that was the optimal body. But today, our society not only approves of being thin, but idealizes it. Before Twiggy, “the average fashion model weighed just 8 percent less than the average American woman, but today fashion models are thinner than 98 percent of American women” (13). The exposure starts at an early age; children are being exposed to the “thin ideal” with dolls such as Barbie, who “would stand 5’9” and weigh a mere 110 pounds” if she were a real person (13). This early introduction makes a big impact because as girls’ bodies develop, they become worried about the places that they are gaining weight where they didn’t have fat before (14). A sickening figure depicts that more than 50 percent of 9 and 10-year-olds say that “they feel better about themselves when they’re dieting” (33), and research found that girls who were as young as 7 years old thought that the thinner women in drawings were more popular and happier (34). They also discuss awareness of eating disorders, through magazines, articles, and television programs. Through the media, they educate people about the danger of abusing food and help them be aware that they are not alone in their journey.     In her article “Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder; Body Image; Skinny on a Weighty Issue”, Meredith Baker points out that almost ten million Americans, mostly teenage and college-aged girls, are currently dealing with anorexia or bulimia. She blames the fashion and entertainment industries for contributing to the problem by showcasing celebrities and models that are unusually skinny. Baker then goes on to share her own experience with an eating disorder and how she overcame it. She believes the United States should follow France’s example and ban stick-thin models from all advertisements. She cites the fact that cultures that value full-figured women have fewer eating disorders and hopes that media outlets in the United States will also begin to provide more realistic role models in advertising.     The media contributes to what teenagers believe is “thin and beautiful.” This is why controlling what is in the media is vital to teenagers. Frances O’Connor, the author of Obesity and the Media, explains advertisers bombard viewers with approximately five hundred advertisements everyday, and at least ten percent of these advertisements are directly about beauty. Teens today are faced with many pressures: how they dress, who their friends are, who they are going to date, and most importantly, what they look like. In today’s society, body image is more than just the mental picture a person has of what their body looks like. For many, body image is also a reflection of how they feel about themselves and their lives. People with a negative body image believe that if they do not look right, other things, such as their personality, intelligence, social skills, or capabilities, also are not right. They think that if they fix their bodies, all their other problems will disappear. This can result in unhealthy weight management practices and an unhealthy relationship with food.
