For some reason money is very important in this world and how much money someone has effects where they are put in society. This try of grouping is social class, everyone is put into a social class and each one differ from each other. Experience that take place in a social class define and shape expectations for education and it’s important to see these relationships because it has limits and benefits.
People are put into different types of social groups because of how they act, families, and predictions of their future. If a person is born into a family that is rich or poor, they will stay in the same social group as their parents. Just because a someone has this kind of experience like getting easy good grades doesn’t mean it is good. If they get good grades easy, then they will never learn how to actually use the skills and apply it to life later on. Also, the expectation that they need to work really hard and do a white-collar job is also dangerous. Students should work hard but they should be able to pick what job they. Having a blue-collar job doesn’t mean that they are dumb or have no valuable skills. In his article “Blue-Collar Brilliance” Mike Rose explains that there are two different types of knowledge a person can hold. One is street smarts and the other is book smarts. Rose goes on to explain that street smarts is valuable and even more valuable than book smarts. This is caused by society connecting blue collar workers as not having the same amount of educations as others. This heavily impacts the people of that social group and is not fair. The people who have street smarts are the blue-collar workers, the plumbers, architect etc. He states “If we believe everyday work…in the future” (1040). It is important to know the connection between social class and education. It shows us that the exception set by society is not always true, and the ones that are true should change for the better. It is to give everyone a fair chance to something as simple as education. What is being said about education and social classes hurt the people in all the different classes.
