A new way to organize education is spreading like wildfire all over the United States. This system is called block scheduling, and it is the focus of a great deal of controversy. The philosophy behind this trend is that the longer periods offer more time for teachers to focus on the students individually and provide meaningful lessons, and that the smaller number of classes per day gives the students less stress due to the limited number of tests, quizzes, and homework assignments. This calls into question the status of the standard eight period school day as the best way to organize class loads, and many administrators are wondering whether adopting block scheduling will be beneficial to their teachers and students. First and foremost, there are three basic types of block scheduling.
A large advantage of block scheduling is that the class day has less classes. On an average day a student will only have four classes; therefore, the student will have less homework, tests, and quizzes. This is also a benefit for teachers since they will not have to grade as much. The lesser number of classes a day also means that students will have more time to focus on their, now longer, class. In a typical eight period day students spend a lot of time transitioning their brain from class to class, so having less longer classes can be beneficial to students. Block scheduling has also been reported improving discipline in schools that use it. This improvement is due to the fact that it limits the number of passing times a day.
