Bleeding, Leading, and Converging

One definition of technology convergence states that it “is the process by which existing technologies merge into new forms that bring together different types of media and applications” (Conjecture Corporation, 2013). The iPhone demonstrates technology convergence. This product takes telephony technology and incorporates both basic and complex computer technology to perform such items as play media, run simple calculations, serve as a gaming platform, and help one find their way through an GPS application (“app”). In fact, many companies question if their new product will work as an “app” for smart phones on the major app networks. Products and services of all kinds grow through technology convergence. At first, the technology receives a label of “bleeding edge,” when advances to “leading edge.” At the end that technology once considered bleeding edge may find it becoming obsolete. As long as the consumer has a demand for the technology, convergence will continue.
On the Bleeding Edge Technology considered “bleeding edge” incorporates items considered too new. These new technologies run a risk of “being unreliable and lead adopters to incur great expense in order to make use of them” (Sinclair, n.d.). This software may feature a lack of consensus about how to apply it. This may be due to a lack of testing or planning to incorporate any of these items for any particular industry (Sinclair, n.d.). If the tech proves too costly or too complex for proper implementation, those authorizing the testing may find themselves on the wrong end of success. If the tech starts to show signs of early adoption by an industry or the public, that bleeding edge technology may find itself becoming “the next big thing” for a period.

An Example of Bleeding Edge Technology The hydrogen car often finds it
