Black Lace Fan
The black lace fan my mother gave me

“The black lace fan my mother gave me” written by Eavan Bolland is about a love affair that a couple had in prewar Paris. The poem suggests that there are always going to be problems in a relationship, but those problems could bring joyful memories.

The title gives us the clue that the object is important or has a meaning to it since it is given as a gift. The poet described in the title that the gift was a black lace fan. The object could symbolize many things; the lace fan could suggest that the woman is elegant and beautiful. However, the black could symbolize the mysterious relationship. The fan could also represent the desire which could state the man's feelings for the woman.

In the first stanza, “it was the first gift he ever gave her” (line 1), it states that the fan was the first thing the mother ever received from the man and it was an expression of the love. A first gift usually has an important value behind it, and because the mother is passing down the fan it has greater values. It shows the gift was bought for a special person. When we are told that he bought the fan for five francs during prewar Paris, which would have been a great deal of money back in the time. However, in line 4-5 “It was stifling. /A starless drought made the nights stormy.” The tension in the poem increased because the poet indicated that it was stifling which had a suffocated feeling to it, also the use of weather imagery shows us that the mood of the poem could have changed with it being a dark and dull.

From line 6-9 “she was always early. He was late. That evening he was later. They wrapped the fan. He looked at his watch. She looked down the boulevard des Capucines.” The speaker is indicating that there are some problems in the relationship that could be that their secretly see each other. When the speaker is saying that the mother was early and the gentleman was late could have been that they didn’t want other people to see them together. Also from line 11, “The heat was killing” the poet use personification saying that the heat was killing meaning that the suspense of waiting is killing her.

In the fourth stanza line 13-14 “these are wild roses, appliquéd on silk by hand, darkly picked, snitched boldly, quickly.” It is a comparison of their relationship being fragile and delicate, yet wild and excite. The poet is purposely evasive line 23-24 “and no way now to know what happened then none at all - unless, of course you improvise:” not know what happen after that night the speaker is saying that only the mother and the gentleman will only know. In the last line of the poem line 27-28 “suddenly she puts out her wing – the whole flirtatious span of it.” means that she pulled out the fan that was given as a gift, after she gave the man the desire that it represented.

The theme of the poem is about the relationship between a man and a woman because of one’s desire. My overally judgment on the poem is that even if we are not in a lasting relationship with someone they can always bring us happiness and create many memories for us. I think that the use of word in the poem really express what the mother could had felt, and the author word really made the mood felt well with the situation. Therefore the poem was really convincing and interesting.

The poem discusses the funeral of a woman and how she is presented in her funeral as someone people would be more likely to romanticize than what she actually was, perhaps out of a misguided sign of respect. The other more hidden meaning behind the poem is the author's reaction to the women herself and how she is portrayed in almost a spiteful, angry way because of his anger over her wasting her life in gray dullness.…

The composer conveys a strong feeling of grief and pain in the poem. The composer creates an empathy towards the widower, by expressing just how lonely he feels after his wife had died, and he had to stay in the place that they had shared together. Through the use of multiple metaphors, "The Christmas paddocks aching in the heat/The windless trees, the nettles in the yard" , the composer builds a path into how the widower is 'aching' after the grief of losing his wife. 'windless trees' implies the feeling of death, as the trees have no leaves, whilst 'nettles' evokes the pain and burning he is feeling at this difficult time. The reader realises that this might be a difficult time for the widower, and empathises to attempt to feel what he feels.…

In the film, Antoine is shown as a troubled boy who is not being raised well by his mother. Since Antoine was born to an uncaring mother, he cannot be blamed for the choices he makes. Antoine’s mother doesn’t accept who Antoine is because she never wanted Antoine to exist in the first place, which is why she has no respect for Antoine from the start. When Antoine’s mother is introduced in the film, she treats Antoine as if he was nothing more than an inferior child and a mistake. Antoine’s mother doesn’t play her role as an accepting mother because she doesn’t give Antoine any guidance; therefore she prevents Antoine from becoming the person he wants to be. In the scene where Antoine and Rene skip school, Antoine sees his mother making out with another man; therefore he gets the impression that his mother is not true to the family. It triggers Antoine’s mistrust for his mother. Afterwards, his mother decides to be deceptive toward Antoine by bribing and act kind towards him in order to get him not to talk about her affair. Although his mother is nice to Antoine for the first time in the film, giving Antoine noble advice, Antoine isn’t surprised by the mother’s new…

The tone of this poem seems to be semi joyful, and familiar in the beginning, of a mother telling about her children being born and nursed with pain and care. In line four, the speaker tells of sparing nothing in order to take care of her young; showing how deep her love is for them. At first it sounds joyful as she speaks of how her young “Mounted the trees, and learned to sing” (Bradstreet) this line gives the sense of joy that comes with learning, nature and singing. The tone then changes, while the speaker is telling of her oldest bird growing up and taking flight, she becomes very sad…

Both the son and his father got up early on Sundays, his father put his clothes on in the cold, and with his aching, cracked hands from the labor and weather, he put on the fire, and no one thanked him. The son woke up to feel the cold break with the fire, and his father called him when it was warm, he would dress, so that his father would not lecture him. The son spoke indifferently to the man who drove out the cold and polished his shoes. He explains that he didn’t know of love’s austere and lonely offices.…

The whole story is based in a train station with the two main characters disputing with each other over a decision that will change their lives. This conversation is going on while the train is threatening to draw nearer. Towards the end of the conversation the man continues to warn about the train. This is evident in the repetition of the line “the train is coming in five minutes” (Hemingway 109.) The man is very impatient with the train and wants it to arrive. This is shown through the line “He looked up…could not see the train” (Hemingway 109.) This is symbolic of him wanting to run away from the truth of the situation and have everything go back to the way things were before the pregnancy. As James Nagel mentions in this line “His comments reflect…free of obligations” (Nagel,) it shows how the man just wants to be free and be with his girlfriend, but his girlfriend does not want the same thing. Her difference of opinion is what causes the animosity to…

The father calling the speaker to wake up “when the rooms were warm” while he woke up when the house was cold again emphasizes the father’s love and his sacrifice for the speaker (7). Then, the poem illustrates a powerful personification with the phrase “fearing the chronic angers of that house” (9). The “chronic angers” symbolizes the anger of the father would express to times in the house due to his low socioeconomic status (9). Thus, the readers recognize that it might have been possible that the speaker did not have a friendly relationship with his father, which is also seen in the speaker’s language when he says “father,” instead of saying “dad” (1). The poor relationship the speaker had with his father adds on to his regret during his…

The poem opens up to a cold September rain falling on a house. Immediately, the reader is left with the sense of dreariness, with a feeling that this little house is surrounded by an unseen tension. The fact that Bishop refers to the building as a “house” rather than a “home” implies that this structure is acting as a structure for shelter, more than a comforting place of rest. This careful attention to vocabulary creates a sense of a cold atmosphere, which in turn is strengthened by the grandmother as she reads “jokes from the almanac, laughing and talking to hide her tears” (Bishop). This introduced element of melancholy is not too overwhelming, however, as the reader is eased back into comfort with the presence of a small child. While the grandmother busies herself with some tea, the child playfully focuses on drawing a house. The scene has now shifted to one that the reader may find some comfort and familiarity in. However, the poem is still mixed with the previous feelings of sadness. The contrast between the worried grandmother and the carefree child questions the innocence that we experienced as children. To us, the world may have seemed to be so simple. Without even recognizing it, however, there are always complications that cause pain behind what we can see. This clash between the unknown and seemingly ordinary in the end is what this poem is attempting to achieve. The six words that are repeated throughout the poem seem customary at the start,…

The poem enters the present with line three as the woman begins to describe problems with the noisy pipes and grime on the windows. Again the pipes and windows are metaphors for the condition of the relationship. The poem goes on to describe the inside of a home “A plate of pears, a piano with a Persian shawl” immediately leads into the image of a perfect home. No different than when anyone enters a home for the first time and the décor gives the impression of perfection. We have all been to people’s homes and the décor always gave an impression of the solidarity within the home. Of course no home is as…

Eavan Bolland’s “The Black Lace Fan my Mother Gave me” from her book, “Outside History” (1990) gives readers the first impression that the poem is about the value of a fan that has been passed down to her. However, based on the title, the term “black lace” raises a sense of mystery and darkness as black lace is not completely see-through, there are spots that need to be filled in. To illustrate the value of the black lace fan, the speaker, who is unknown, narrates on how the mother received it and also used very vivid descriptions on its significance.…
