Black Bart AKA Charles Bolles

Black Bart didn’t start out a robber, he started as a normal child. Charles E Bolles (Black Bart's real name), was born in 1829 in Norfolk, England. He was the third of ten children and son of Charlie and Maria Bolles. His family sailed to America when Charles was two years old. They went to Jefferson County, New York where Charles’s father bought a farm. Here, Charles grew up. He received a normal school education for the time, but especially excelled at sports. He stayed in New York until he decided to go to join in on the California Gold Rush. In 1849 Charles went out to California with his cousin David joined in on the California Gold Rush. Black Bart walked up to the Wells Fargo driver John Shine, and demanded that he throw down the box. Black Bart also threatened that if John Shine tried to attack, his ¨men” would shoot him. John saw the ´rifles´ sticking out of the bushes, and gave him the box, which had $348. A woman offered Black Bart money, but he turned it down, saying he was only interested in Wells Fargo's money. In a hurry, Black Bart ran away, accidently dropping a handkerchief that would be traced back to him. Detective J.B. Hume checked all Chinese laundries far and wide in California. They eventually traced it to Charles Bolles in a small hotel. Mr. Bolles was tried in court for robbery, and was convicted. He went to San Quentin Prison, and was released after 4.5 years for being a model prisoner. After being released to prison, he went to San Francisco for a few years, and never returned to his wife. Then, in 1888, Charles Bolles disappeared. Some people say he went back to robbing. Some say he went to Nevada, Montana, or even Japan. However, a 1917 obituary reported the death of a Charles Bolles at age 88. This might have been Black Bart, but no one can make the call.
