Biomedical Science Personal Statement
My interest in science dates back to very early on, however, my devoted fascination in medicine didn’t come until I discovered an old hospital drama, “ER”. In my high school years I excelled in biology, physiology, and anatomy. When I was a sophomore in High School, I began taking Advanced Placement courses because I enjoyed the excitement of completing a difficult challenge. Although all of these courses proved to be great learning experiences I found the AP biology class to be the most delightful. Given my intense fascination with the field of medicine, it seemed only natural that I pursue a career in biomedical sciences. I began my undergraduate career at a community college in hopes of staying debt free for as long as possible. I did so by continuing to work as hard as I can and pushing through the obstacles that life has put in my path. Throughout my time at Mercer County College I had the opportunity to be exposed to the full range of demanding, yet intriguing science courses, all of which only sparked my curiosity of the science field further. I've also had the chance to experience a variety of humanities and social science electives which, I believe were essential in …show more content…

Throughout my education, science based courses have been a central core. One course that left an indelible mark was called, “Medical Careers”. I had the invaluable opportunity to shadow and learn hands-on material from both doctors and nurses at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Hospital. I can still vividly recall the eleven-year-old me fawning over the likes of Lawrence Krauss and Neil Degrasse Tyson. I was completely immersed in everything and anything pertaining to the vast universe beyond our seemingly insignificant world. I thought I had it all figured out. I would devote my life to being an astrophysicist and eventually earn my PhD. I would relish in the pink lettering on my wall that said “Dr. Mia”, but as I approach my late teens, my mind has been bombarded with what-ifs and buts. Irrespective of my change of heart, I still have an intense passion for math and science since it is how we explain the world around us, and that is why I have settled on biomedical engineering.…

I am interested in pursing the major I chose above because I have developed a passion for medicine through my own health obstacles. I suffer from Chronic Migraines, which has caused me to spend a great deal of my life in doctor's offices. Positive experiences with my doctors lead to me idolizing them as a young child; so much so that I memorized the every bone in the body at the age of five. This passion stayed alive and well as I grew older, however my admiration began to transition from the doctors themselves to the subject. This all stemmed from my own health; I wanted to know exactly what was happening with my body and why. Now, I want to dedicate my life to the subject and possibly be the doctor that inspires someone to discover their…

Tackling biomedical engineering as my undergraduate degree has been a challenging and exciting experience. Though a rigorous endeavor, I am thankful for all it has offered and believe it has extensively prepared me for my future in medicine. My upper-level math courses have demanded a high level of critical thinking to understand abstract concepts, thinking I know will be useful when invoked to conceptualize in unconventional ways as a physician. The biomedical engineering curriculum I have undertaken involves a complex array of quantitative and analytical approaches to human systems. Comparing physiology to foundational engineering concepts has enhanced my understanding of the ways in which medicine and the human body function. Classes such…
