Biomedical Model
Biomedical model is a main model used last century in medical practice (Capra, 2010). Prior to the development of nursing theory, nursing practice is influenced by this model as well (Pearson, Vaughan, & FitzGerald, 2005). The model is divided the mind and the body into two different parts and they put their focus on the body parts (Capra, 2010). Maintenance of the internal environment and restoration of the physiological function is the goal of this model.
Diagnostic tool started to evolve as it is necessary in assisting doctors to detect the abnormality of the body part in order to provide treatment to resolve the condition. Biomedical model which develops the knowledge of physical sciences such as anatomy and physiology has helped nurses to understand the body part and their function. Precautions and care to be taken from specimen collection until the specimen is sent to laboratory for pathology is also important in order to get an accurate result. Pharmacology allow the nurses to understand the functions, side effect of the drugs and the potential adverse effect in order to provide immediate resuscitation.
Germ theory of disease which introduced by Pasteur was recognized by medical professionals and further developed by the physician Robert Koch (Capra, 2010). The discovery of antibiotic, vaccination and precautions is developed to prevent infection (Capra, 2010). The advantages for study of microbiology is to allow the nurses to identify the characteristic of the microorganism, route of transmission, places where inhabited by the microbe and thus able to take the precautions to prevent the infections. One of the example is all the items that will be used for surgical need to be sterilized. Aseptic technique needs to be maintained to prevent the growth of microorganism which can cause complication.
