Biology Honors Reflection 2nd nine weeks
Period: 2

In this honors portfolio we created models of the cell cycle and used those models to create an animation. The purpose of this is to, first, memorize the visuals of the cell cycle. The Second is to understand what’s going on in the visuals by creating commentary to describe the changes from stage to stage. The third is to repeat the first and second by critiquing other videos. We used our understanding of mitosis that we were taught in class to create these animations. The easiest part of this project would be creating the models. This is can be done from memory easily. The hardest part of this project would be uploading my animation. The process was missing a step that is sometimes not even there. There is a save button after the final step that you have to click on that does not show up all the time. My friend had the same problem but fixed it by trying random stuff like that save button. I always question how the cell knows what to do in mitosis. Sure the DNA tells it what to do, but I don’t understand how it gets that information. This project on top on the things I talked about in the first paragraph gave me a better understanding of technology in general. Specifically, This project introduced me to photo story and gave me more experience with wcs gmail. I always appreciate being introduced to new technology that I could use in the future.

    Mitosis is a cellular process that replicates chromosomes and produces two identical nuclei in preparation for cell division, from the original cell two cells are derived, each of which possesses the same genetic material. Mitosis has five phases: interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase. Interphase The DNA duplicates during interphase to prepare for mitosis. Chromosomes are not clearly discerned in the nucleus. Prophase Chromatin in the nucleus begins to condense and becomes visible in the light microscope as chromosomes. The nuclear membrane dissolves. Microtubules attach at the kinetochores and the chromosomes begin moving. Metaphase Spindle fibers align the chromosomes along the middle of the cell nucleus. This line is referred to as the metaphase plate. This organization helps to ensure that in the next phase, when the chromosomes are separated, each new nucleus will receive one copy of each chromosome. Anaphase the paired chromosomes separate at the kinetochores and move to opposite sides of the cell. Motion results from a combination of kinetochore movement along the spindle microtubules and through the physical interaction of polar microtubules. Telophase New membranes form around the daughter nuclei while the chromosomes disperse. These growth tissues are found principally in the roots, in the shoots and in the cambium. This experiment aims at observing cell multiplication in the root tip of a garlic root.…

Then it divides the genetic information equally into two daughter nuclei. The cell cycle can be divided into two phases interphase and mitotic phase.     The cell cycle involves actively dividing eukaryotic cells passing through a series of stages known collectively as the cell cycle.
