Survival of the Sickest chapter two concentrates mainly on the disease named diabetes. The full scientific name is actually diabetes mellitus, or “passing through honey sweet” Diabetes is an extremely common and well known disease that becomes more and more common every day. The disease is based on sugar is the body, or glucose. When your body breaks down carbohydrates, it produces glucose, and essential sugar for the human body. There is a bodily function in which insulin helps the body use glucose, and this process is broken in diabetics. Due to this, the amount of sugar in a diabetic is raised to dangerously high levels. The consequences to leaving this untreated include blindness, heart disease, dehydration, coma and even death.

There are two main types of diabetes. They are Type 1 and Type 2. These two are also known as juvenile diabetes and adult-onset diabetes. Lately, adult-onset diabetes is becoming more and more common due to child obesity. Medications are mainly insulin injections or surgically implanted insulin pumps, as inserting more insulin into the body seems to be the only solution to diabetes. Due to the fact that Type 1 diabetes are something that one is born with, it requires extra attention and close detail to diet and exercise as well as blood sugar levels. Type 2 diabetes patients still produce some insulin, just a low amount. Many times, Type 2 diabetes can be managed with medication instead of insulin injections.

A third type of diabetes include one that it onset to woman during pregnancy. This is known as gestational diabetes, and can be temporary. It occurs in about 4% of pregnant woman, and may lead to other diseases. It is being researched that this type of diabetes may be triggered by the fetus.
