Biography of an Unknown Entrepreneur
The Photographing Pigeon Lover

The Entrepreneur which I have chosen is Eberhard Gramatzki. Eberhard was born on the 27th February 1942, and grew up in Kellenhusen (Germany) with his six siblings. After marrying a woman called Janet from the Netherlands (1967), they moved to Vermont to continue their life there, while having three children. He became interested in becoming an entrepreneur when he was a working engineer for over 24 years at IBM (International Business Machines), a leading US computer manufacturer. In 1992 there was a downturn in US economy, and word was spreading throughout the company that it was considered to discharge employees.
Motivated by the fear for his family, and the wish not to leave the area and home he was currently living in to look for a job, he started searching for other means of income, while still working at IBM (International Business Machines) full time.
While visiting his brother on a trip to Chicago, he met a retired professor a dedicated pigeon racer. Gramatzki himself was a devoted pigeon racer too (he would occasionally let his pigeon race at a club in Vermont), so the two men had a deep conversation about their beloved pigeons in the office of the professor.
Hanging on the walls of the office were several clearly well-made photographs of the famous winning pigeons of the professor. Intrigued by these beautiful pigeon photographs, Eberhard asked about the man who produced these. With a rather grim expression the professor answered that he had to hire a photographer all the way from the Netherlands, while paying between $2000 and $3000 due to the photographer’s airfare and work. At that time there was no one in the USA who could create professional pigeon photographs. However, there are many pigeon racer in all states of the USA, who all want a good quality portrait of their winning pigeon.
With these thoughts in the back of his mind, Eberhard started researching more into the topic and found the need for three

Some crossings offer a sense of conformity instead of escape and freedom. In Migrant Hostels, the poet likens the migrants to pigeon, to show the setting where “nationalities sought each other” to feel belonged and safe. The imagery of the endless movement of pigeons shows the moving migrants seeking for nationals to have support and feel protected and have freedom of movement. This also denotes that they are finding people with the same experience who thus have the same degree of belonging to a group and a sense of…

To overcome this insecurity, Skrzynecki's family sought for friendships, instinctively linking on with people of similar accents, surnames and places of origin. Similes such as "nationalities sought each out instinctively - a homing pigeon" and "we lived like birds of passage - always sensing a change in the weather" show, for belonging, they needed friendship and trust. Symbolically, pigeons - like these European migrants - were also foreign birds that were brought from overseas to find a home in Australia.…

“The pigeon-house pleased her. It at once assumed the intimate character of a home, while she herself invested it with a charm which it reflected like a warm glow. There was with her a feeling of having descended in the social scale, with a corresponding sense of having risen in the spiritual. Every step which she took toward relieving herself from obligations added to her strength and expansion as an individual. She began to look with her own eyes; to see and to apprehend the deeper undercurrents of life. No longer was she content to “feed upon opinion” when her own soul had invited her.”…

Bonella firstly builds a very negative view of pigeons, describing the presence of these “pests” as a “plague” and pointing out that they were imported into Australia long ago for specific purposes, planting in readers’ minds the idea that they clearly do not belong in our cities now. The association of pigeons – which many readers may first see as pleasant and harmless – with such ugly and undesirable things as cockroaches and rats works to dispel from the readers’ minds any thoughts…

In the essay, "The Bothersome Beauty of Pigeons," Bruce Ballenger initially compares the street vendors in one of Florence's piazzas to the urban pigeons we are so familiar with. He elogently describes the vendors as marvelous spectacles who add culture and life to urban areas. While they are considered a neusance to a lot of people, they also hold a certain beauty. They are much like the pigeons, and there seems to be a war against both the illegal street vendors and the city pigeon. It is a war where there are no hearts involved. The police almost turn a blind eye toward the illegal act of vending without a liscense, much like the average person tolerates the pigeon. I think that Ballenger's main idea for his essay is exploring the paradoxical feelings that we can get from things that are bothersome yet beautiful, specifically the pigeon. Ballenger might have originally asked himself, Why, if pigeons are such a neusance, are people still so facinated and enchanted by the creatures?…

Now that I've had time to think about this, the pigeon (I'll call him Charlie) might not have been blown off course after all. These are very accomplished professional beggar pigeons. Polished thespians, their clever begging ruses are world famous and the subject of numerous books and movies. Charlie was most likely using the wind as a ploy to get me to spill my bucket of boiled shrimp. Plan 'A' hadn't worked because I'd hung on to the bucket of shrimp, but plan 'B', the waitress with her French fries, had. Beggar pigeons aren't fussy. They'll eat off your table or directly from the…
