What does it mean to be GREAT? The Webster’s dictionary defines the word great as notably large in size, predominant, or remarkable. The Oxford’s dictionary defines the word great as, of ability, quality, or eminence, considerably above average. Alexander the 3rd’s greatness has been questioned in the past and even scholars have long debated the question was Alexander the Great really Great? But one must ask how his legend has survived for thousands of years and his name well known? Many would venture to say that Alexander was great because he was able to rule his father’s kingdom at a very young age. He was able to build an army and conquer several cities in a short amount of time. Others would argue that he was not great because he was known for the unnecessary slaughter of innocent people, murdered his friends and it was suggested that he participated in the assassination of his father King Phillip although never proven.…

At only 32 years old, Alexander had created the largest empire the world had seen. He conquered land ranging from Greece to Egypt, and from Egypt to Asia and Persia. At just 20 years old, Alexander received the throne from Philip. Soon after, he began to build his empire. Alexander was very proud of his accomplishments, as one would expect. After defeating his close friend Dareius in battle, Alexander boasted, “What, pray? Dost thou not think that we are already victorious, now that we are relieved from wandering a vast and desolate country in pursuit of a Dareius who avoids battle?” (Plutarch…

During the final years of Alexander’s father; Phillip the second was assassinated as King of Macedonia in the year of 336 B.C.E. (Reword this sentence a bit. During Alexander’s final teen years?) Alexander then took his place as King, and researched interests of science, and philosophy; educated by Aristotle. At the age of nineteen, Alexander first restored the Macedonian rule in Thessaly, and defeated the Thracians in the year of 335 B.C.E. After the first rulings of the western land, Alexander then turned to the Illyrians where he ravaged and ruled and became prime (do you mean that he demonstrated his stron military leadership?) Make sure that you use the sources as your voice. Again, this is one of those papers where your focus is on what you are learning from the primary sources that you read) in military leadership. As Greek lands became overruled during Alexander’s teenage years, Greek civilization turned to Alexander’s control. After the final fight in Thebes, Alexander became victorious, gained power and became a powerful leader to lead his military southward, where the turning point of his conquest began.…

In James Romm's edit of recollections from authors Arrian, Diodorus, Plutarch, and Quintus Curtuis of Alexander's life, we are presented the good and bad tales and parts of Alexander's life. So, James Romm presents the question: Should Alexander be considered great? Like James Romm suggests, I as a modern reader have formed my own opinions of Alexander and if he should indeed be considered "Great". In my opinion, while Alexander was a man whom had qualities that could consider him great, he continuously harmed or killed those close to him and attempted to base a civilization of hypocritical principles.…

I wrote this obituary to let you know that Alexander has passed on. First I want to tell you what an honor it is to be a general in his army. I remember standing next to him thinking I am one of the few who have seen the look on his face when we took over his Fathers dream, Persia. When we won the battle of Granicus in 334 B.C. he appointed me to General. Then we marched on to Susa where we took that over and I noticed something I never seen a leader do. He was fighting on the front line with the soldiers and I. He was very ecstatic as we marched on to India were we where forced to turn around by our own troops. He was very disappointed but he knew that his very strategic war plans and strategic mind had expanded his empire this far. He like most soldiers were never scared and if he was did not show it. The most beautiful place we went to and by far most beautiful was Babylon. The people there were nice and the city was colorful with green everywhere. I think if he wanted to die that is the place he would want to be. And with that statement I would like to wrap this oration up with a thank you to Alexander for all your expertise on the battle field and kindness off. So thank you and rest in…

Throughout history the actions, beliefs, and achievements of certain individuals have changed global history. One such individual is Alexander of Macedon, better known as Alexander the Great. During the years of Aristotle came the military rule of Philip of Macedonia. Philip was a great conqueror, but not as great or as popular as his son Alexander. The main thrust of Alexander's reign was that it happened so quickly. With lightning fast speed, the greatest mortal hero of Greece conquered the entire known world. Those conquests would restructure the world order and unite East and West as a cohesive whole in a way beyond what anyone had, up to that point, dreamed of. While the immediate effects of Alexander's life may have seemed mind-boggling to those who lived in his time, the long-term changes wrought by this one man who strove to be a god are even more remarkable.…

Once upon a time, in a dark and gloomy land far away, a battle that had been going on for the last five hundred years between god and mortal raged on. The war all began when the King of Macedon, also known as Alexander the Great had insulted the mighty all powerful Ares’s skill on the battlefield. Since he was the God of War, he was very offended by the statement made, so he challenged Alexander the Great, like any other God would do, to a fight. The battle went from a winning streak for the Gods where the mortals were about to completely give up, to the mortals winning the next thirty battles, giving them hope and strength to go on and the possible outcome of a victory.…
