Biographical Essay: Ken Keegan's Seventh Mistake
The game was on the line 4-4 bottom of the 6th crack the ball went flying going going! On the second day of the baseball tournament (championship Sunday). We had a rough go. The first game we had a very shaky start. Gavin was pitching roughly. The other team scored 5 runs in the 1st inning. But we battled back. We won the game 8 to 5 in a comeback game. The 2nd game was a blowout in the 1st inning ,we scored 10 runs. Keegan only let up 3 so they didn't have a chance to come back. It was funny to be completely honest.
For the championship game my cousin who plays D2 baseball at Olivet came to watch me play. The first at bats were really shaky. The other team came out swinging. But we came out like a bunch of preschoolers.
In the 6th inning

When the first game came I was extremely happy yet nervous also. We ended up winning the game by the score of three runs to two although I did not get to bat at all and was put in only for two innings of defense. I was disappointed that I did not get to play much but I was happy with the win. Our second game was the next day and I hoped to get more playing time then. When that day came it turned out that we were playing an extremely skilled team. We were losing three to one in the last inning and I still hadn’t played at all the whole game. One of my friends hit a double and then another one of my teammates hit a single to knock him in to score. The score was now three to two and we had a chance to come back. My coach then decided that we needed someone faster on the bases so he called for a…

Then we got down to business and took the field. Keegan started pitching the ball to me. Soon enough the ump said “balls in”, which meant I had to throw the ball down to second base, so the game could start. It was a pretty quick inning because nobody could get a hit off of Keegan.…

After we warmed up it was time to play the final game. We were the home team so we were in the field first. I was playing center field and it was so hot outside that I felt like I was going to melt. When the umpire yelled, ”Play Ball!” I jumped up on my feet and was ready for the first pitch. On the very first pitch the batter hit the ball straight to me. I watched the ball go up in the air and I was putting my glove up in the air ready to catch the ball but then I lost track of it. My sunglasses did not help me with the sun. I was trying to find the ball, but then SMACK! The ball hit me straight in the mouth and I fell to the ground like a sack of…

It’s the last game and we are warming up for the game. We were feeling super confident because we had just won the game before that. But as we see the other team we lost all of our confidence because they were all like 6’3 or taller. After warmups coach told us who was pitching and he said me. I was like what the heck I’m gonna get killed by these monsters. I was a squirmy as a warm cause I was excited to prove myself. As I’m warming up to pitch on the mound I was thinking of what pitches I was gonna throw. When the ump said batter up I knew that I was gonna have to pitch the ball low in the strike zone. The first pitch in the game I accidentally left the ball up and the kid whacked to the fence in the air. That was as fast as race cars start.…

Our second game was against the former coach for UNA, Jason Anderson. Coach Anderson was the original coach who offered me a scholarship to UNA. The tension was high, due to familiar faces. We ended up having to play them twice and we beat them both times. After winning all four games we reached the Championship series. Humbolt, from New York, was our biggest obstacle we had to face. The team with the best two out of three wins was to be named the National Champs. The first game we played, we lost to Humbolt. The loss hit us hard and our spirits were down. All season we had not faced a pitcher that shut us down completely. Walking to the locker room after that loss, felt as if we had already became runner up in the Championship series. Beating Humbolt twice the next day, seemed to be an impossible task. We sat in silence as tears ran down our faces. Our coaches let us cry and let us get our emotions out. She knew the pressure we felt and the adversity that was staring us in the face. After 30 minutes of silence, one of the players brought up the games we had to play against UAH. Another player mentioned the victory against Valdosta, and we were instantly reminded that we were capable of anything. We knew that all of the hard work we had put in was not going to waste. We were not going to settle for anything else but a National…

Then, the bad news began, Eller hit a dropping ball that fell in between Felsch and Jackson. When Felsch got the ball, he tried to throw it to second, but the throw went over the second baseman's head allowing the runner to advance to third base. The leadoff hitter was up next and hit a line drive right over the shortstop's head for a single bringing the run in. The next batter hit a double after some controversial fielding by Felsch. The next hit was also to Felsch, andthe fielding was even worse allowing two more runs to score, and the hitter eventually scored also the opposing pitcher pitched well enough to hold the Sox’s leaving the Red’s one game from winning the series in the newly adapted best-of-nine format (BR…

I will always remember the kids that were playing there and I think that some of those kids would go to the mlb. So me and my dad finally arrived at the ballparks and I then rolled my bag over to where my team was staying. I then slowly walked over to my team and began to greet them. My coach looked really familiar and he was bald and wearing these shaded glasses. I also remember one of the kids named Derek who went and tossed with me in the grass on one the fields we were by and every time he went up to bat he would use a wooden bat and he hit very well in each game. We then played 2 games, one against white and one against gray. It was very funny playing the white team because Johnny, Logan, and Nick were all on that team (they used to be on the same team). Anyway, my team did well and we won against white team but lost to the gray team. I was ⅗ as an average in each game. So now on to the exciting part. The very next day, there were these challenges that everybody did called Golden Arm, Base Running, and the Homerun Derby. I decided to do the Golden Arm and the Base Running. In the base running, I didn’t do so well (the guy in first was a minute faster than me), but in the Golden Arm, that is a different story. So basically you had to stand in front of the mound and…

At my first baseball game I was really nervous. I was playing with kids who had already been playing for a year. I didn't have as much experience as the other kids. But luckily I got a hit. My mom and myself were so proud. Later on in the inning I soon came around the bases to score. Finally my team won and we had cupcakes to celebrate.…

It all came down to the this game. My team, The Surge, had just made it to the Championship game. The previous game was way too close. It was the morning of the final 13u Louisville slugger baseball tournament. As I was putting on my uniform, I noticed my hand shaking slightly. I do what I normally do, take a deep breath, count down from ten, and finally imagine myself at the plate, cranking one over their heads.…

In the first five minutes, I allowed them to score. That made the score 35-34 with a huge field goal attempt up next. As a team we were tired, bruised, and even hurt, but we never gave up. We blocked the field goal to win the football game 35-34. The closest football game in South Dakota football history. After the game we were all over-joyed, everyone smiled, many laughed, and some were moved to tears.…
