Proteins are very important throughout the body. They have a lot of functions in cells. Antibodies are proteins that help cells rebuild the cells when they are destroyed. Transport proteins move substances from one place to another. Regulatory proteins control cellular metabolism in a way that cells throughout the body can have the right amount of glucose in the blood. A common protein is an enzyme; in cells they speed up chemical reactions. For an example, “amylase is an enzyme that speeds up the breakdown of starch in the mouth and small intestine” pg 28. All proteins are made up of amino acids. There about 20 different amino acids that is found in cells. A chain of two of more amino acids is called a peptide and the bond between the different amino acids is called a peptide bond. Very long chains of amino acids are called polypeptide. In addition, a protein can have one or more polypeptide chains. To test for proteins, one must use biuret reagent. “Biuret regent contains solutions of sodium or potassium and a small amount of dilute copper sulfate solution” pg 28. The reagent then changes color to see if there is a sign of proteins. I think that the distilled water will show a negative result, Albumin will show a positive result, Pepsin will show a positive result and starch will show a negative result. For this experiment a person would need biuret reagent, four test tubes, distilled water, Albumin, Pepsin, and starch, a ruler and a wax pencil. First you get each tube and you measure up the 1cm point and then you mark the point with the wax pencil. For each tube you have to add the different contents up to the 1cm mark. Then for each tube you add five drops of biuret reagent. Last, you record the different color changes that you saw.

The object of this experiment is to determine how changing the size of the beak of a finch will affect the population as well as the growth rate of the finch’s beak. The reason for the experiment is to evaluate evolution and how it affects the finch’s population, and how natural selection is always present in life. In this experiment I will show that the finch will continue to evolve until its beak has reached the optimal size for sustaining life, when changing the beak size to a much larger size we will see that the finch will have no need for further evolution of its beak and that its population will become much more stable and consistent throughout the years.…

In order to understand a little bit about the effects of common household drugs such as nicotine and caffeine on pulsation rate, an experiment was conducted with Lumbriculus Variegattus (Blackworms). In week 1, we observed the basal rate of three different worms, and then placed the same three worms on different concentrations of caffeine and nicotine. “Caffeine is known to act as an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain; it promotes sleep and suppresses aurosal, binding to the adenosine neurotransmitter receptor to block its inhibitory action” (CCNY lab manual, 2014). Before our experiment was conducted we hypothesized that increasing the concentration of caffeine will increase the pulsation rate. During this experiment we used 1.0mM, 3.0mM, and 10.0mM concentrations of caffeine. The highest the concentration the more effect it would have on the pulsation rate, so in this case we could assume that 10.0mM would have the highest effect on the pulsation rate of the blackworms.…

Protein is a structure within our bodies that consists of amino acids. The cells in our bodies need this to function properly. If we did not have protein, our body’s functions of regulating cells, tissue and organs could not exist. Our muscles, skin and bones contain a large amount of protein, it makes up 20% of our body weight making it vital to our bodies functioning. Proteins are made up of thousands of amino acids and there are twenty different ones that make up a protein. “The sequence of the amino acids determines each proteins unique three dimensional structure and its specific function.” (McDonald) There are various different types of proteins and each one has a specific function. There are antibody proteins which help to protect the body. The enzyme proteins help to facilitate the chemical reactions that take place in our cells. The messenger proteins are the ones that transmit signals to coordinate our body’s…
