STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: Biology 143, a one-semester course, is one of the academic foundation courses. It is an in depth coverage of selected biological principles covering the molecular through the population levels of life forms and functions for the non-science major student. Methods of inquiry and analysis will be emphasized.
COURSE OBJECTIVES: The overall goal of this course encompasses fostering biological literacy among students ensuring that students are prepared academically and experimentally with the basic biological concepts needed to facilitate their understanding of life processes and the ability to incorporate newer biological concepts when applicable. The course will provide a biological framework from which students will be able to gain a better view of the structure and function of the human body.
Upon completion of this course the student will be able:
1. To demonstrate a workable knowledge of biological principles and concepts.
2. To develop an appreciation of all living things
TEXT: Campbell Essential Biology with Physiology (4th ed) by Simon, Dickey and Reece
COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Each student is required to attend each class session.
EVALUATION METHOD: Exams will be worth 100 points and will be administered during the course. There will be four exams during the course of the semester and a final exam to be administered during finals week. The date of the final will be announced toward the end of the semester.
