Bildungsroman In The Film 'The Graduate'
Bildungsroman / The Graduate
“Coming of Age” is a very scary thought after graduating school because it’s a validation that young students are at an age where they’re becoming adults, like Ben in the movie, The Graduate. To students entering adult hood means life making decisions need to be made as soon as possible; like deciding what school to go to, what classes to take, what job to pursue, who to fall in love with, and to find who you really are as a person. In the movie, The Graduate, Ben shows how he faces challenges after he graduates college and how students struggle after graduating school before the 19th Century. Even though the movie was before this century, I think that the “Coming of Age” challenges haven’t changed since 1967 because

When Ben’s parents threw a graduation party for him he felt like he was pressured to pick a career right after college. Just like him my parents, friends, family members, and other random people always open conversations with the question “what do you want to be after college?” and I always reply, “I don’t really know yet.” In the movie, when Ben was being pulled aside from family members they had suggestions for his future career, and I can relate to that because, in family occasions, suggestions of what I can be in the future are always pouring from every direction. For me, the suggestions don’t help but put more pressure on me and for some reason, the suggestions don’t interest me. Every suggestion I’ve heard is the same ones I hear whenever a person comes up to me. But for Ben, he’s persuaded to follow his parents’ footsteps and granted a sportscar, a job with his parents, and other fancy goodies.
In conclusion, the challenges in 2017 aren’t really in contrast with the challenges of 1967. The pressure and decision making is still one of the biggest challenges but the way its dealt with can be different when compared to the year 1967. The good thing about entering adult-hood is that you’re beginning a new chapter in your life and can learn how to deal with stressful situations like future decision

What makes a “coming of age” film? Comparing two films are easy, no problem at all. But having to find and then discuss the differences is difficult. In both of these films (The Graduate & Dead Poets Society), the camera shots are the same but also different. Since both of these are “coming of age films” it’s a little easier to compare/contrast. Between these two films, Dead Poets Society does a better job with conveying its message.…

Throughout almost everyone’s life, there is a focus on the future, more specifically in a future career. As young children, we have the hopes of being doctors, police officers, fairies, and princess. When we grow older we learn about the realities and the limits of our futures. We understand that we cannot be fairies or the Flash. However, the pressure to decide what to do in life is always there. A pressure which is the most prevalent in the first years of college. In “Major Decisions” by James Tunstead Burtchaell he explores the ways that picking a major in college is less of a pathway to a certain career, but more to wider possibilities in the future. The importance in not in the career that can be the final goal but rather the knowledge about…

Growth in characters is a major characteristic of the “coming of age” film. The young characters rebel, find their “true” self, and have problems with the authority that exists. Most often these characters grow as they find the source of their rebellion and “find” themselves. Growth comes easily to the “coming of age” film because of the age of the characters and the natural mental social changes of that time. Growth is important to a “coming of age” film because it includes the four main elements of a coming of age film; retaliation by a young adult, breaking free, relationship problems, and messages from adults to the young adult. All of those four elements help the character grow from the beginning to the end of the movie. By watching The Graduate and Dead Poets Society one…

Most students graduate from high school knowing what they want to persuade in life and accomplish, many other students don’t have a clue about anything they want to do nor persuade so for example, in the article The Pink Floyd Night School by Mark Edmundson, he as many other students after graduating high school didn’t know what he was going to do or study as a career, basically he had no clue of what he wanted. Life experience brought him the knowledge of knowing what he wanted to do in his career life. Edmundson uses many life experiences, as well as vivid examples to expand his argument of why he thinks students should take time off of school and about a year to just relax and figure out what career exactly do they want.…
