Although he was faced with many dangers and is forced to go outside of his comfort zone and build up the confidence to save him comrades, he still returns to Rivendell an untried hero as he was when he left for his adventure. In contradiction, at the beginning of the book, Bilbo lives in his own little world in the Shire with his small hobbit home. But by the end of the book, he has gained an understanding of the world around him, and a sense of adventure, along with courage, bravery, and loyalty. Although he didn’t end the story as a hero, he gained several personal values along the way.
In chapter 8, the dwarves travel through the forest of Mirkwood in search of where the forest ends. Bilbo dozes off into a sleep and when he wakes up he finds himself bound up by the sticky threads spun by a giant spider. With some difficulty, he frees himself and kills the spider with his sword he later names Sting. He passes out from exhaustion but once he comes back, he finds that he feels much braver. He intelligently thinks to put on his ring. With it he becomes invisible and goes looking for his friends. He finds the dwarves hanging in spider webs guarded by giant spiders. Bilbo scare

By the end of this expedition, he will have changed almost everything about him and how he lives everyday life. At the beginning of the story, Bilbo was kind, but was also extremely contempt with his way of life. He wanted nothing more than to “ eat meals six times a day” (Tolkien 5). But by the end of the expedition he had learned to make it through with what he has; and to also put himself in danger for the sake of others “killing of the giant spider, all alone by himself in the dark”( Tolkien 135). Towards the beginning of the book, the dwarves do not have a very high opinion of the hobbit; though, as the book progresses, their opinion of Bilbo slowly grows. By the end, the dwarves have a high respect for Mr. Baggins. When Bilbo escapes from seemingly certain death or saves the group, the dwarves can see his bravery, strength, and intelligence that they thought he had none of. An example would include the time when Bilbo lost his way in the goblin cave, and he escapes what the dwarves picture as Bilbo’s certain demise. That confirms a prime reason that Bilbo proves himself qualified to lead the adventurers, but naysayers still remain.…
