CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
Describe that mosquitoes are possible carriers of diseases. How?
State the rate (yearly) of mosquito bite related diseases in the Philippines. Is it alarming? What ways were sought to prevent mosquito bite related diseases from spreading?
Briefly state why this study is conducted (objectives).
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The study specifically aims to:
1. Present comparative analysis of effectiveness between commercial product (BAYGON) and experimental product
2. Determine the length of time before mosquitoes completely die when sprayed with experimental product
HYPOTHESIS
The study infers that the solution of Garlic (Allium sativum) and Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) is more effective than commercially available product on mosquitoes.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The study aims at presenting the market a cheaper alternative mosquito killer to save cost. The materials that will be used are recycled and organic in which their availability is easily utilized and therefore they will spend less amount of money in treatment for the abundance of mosquitoes in the society.
SCOPE AND LIMITATION

ABSTRACT: Background: The introduction of West Nile virus in Canada is changing the perception that mosquitoes are nothing more than nuisance pests. Interest is increasing in ways to protect against mosquitoes. One of the commonest is the use of insect repellents. Methods: Tests were undertaken to determine the effectiveness of three mosquito repellents: 95% DEET, Avon Skin So Soft bath oil, and a “special mixture” of substances thought to have insect repellent qualities. The repellents were compared with each other and against a placebo in eight separate test sessions. During each session, the three repellents and placebo were tested simultaneously. Each session lasted between 90 and 120 minutes. After every session, the repellents were thoroughly washed from the test site and a minimum of 72 hours elapsed between tests. There were four test sites: the author’s right arm, left arm, right leg, and left leg. All test…

Currently before the Genericville city council is a proposed pesticide application program to reduce the mosquito population. The current pesticide of choice for this is Malathion. While there are many different viewpoints on the effects of the pesticide Malathion, it is my decision as a city council member to vote for the usage of Malathion as part of the pesticide application program. Included in my vote is the condition that extensive educational efforts are given to the public, notice of when and where the pesticide will be applied, and its potential risk and hazards be given to the citizens of Genericville.…

The use of pesticides is an important decision that thousands of communities face each year. Nobody likes dealing with mosquitos and the diseases they bring so using chemicals and pesticides is an option but with other consequences. Mosquitos carry West Nile Virus that affects the city of Genericville every year with 50 cases projected this year in the city and two fatalities as well. On the other hand, the chemicals proposed for controlling the mosquito population has its own risks. The pesticide Malathion is also dangerous to people if they come in contact with it before it degrades. The potential for citizens of the city being exposed is almost a certainty with many short and long-term risks being unknown. In this risk assessment I will weigh the consequences of each approach being the use of Malathion on the mosquitos and wetlands or not and battle the mosquitos and West Nile Virus. This assessment will include Hazard identification, dose-response, exposure, and risk characterization.…

An insecticide is a substance used by humans to gain some advantage in the struggle with various insects that are considered “pests”. In the sense used here, a pest insect is considered undesirable, from the human perspective, because: (a) it is a vector that transmits disease causing pathogens to humans (such as those causing malaria or yellow fever), or other diseases to livestock or crop plants; or (b) it causes a loss of the productivity or economic value of crop plants, domestic animals, or stored foodstuffs. The abundance and effects of almost all insect pests can be managed through the judicious use of insecticides.…

Given the recent surge of the West Nile virus spread by infected mosquitoes, it is interesting to explore the value of garlic as one more method for avoiding mosquito bites. A number of studies have shown that the oil fraction of garlic destroys certain species of mosquito larvae. Garlic sprays (made primarily with garlic extract) are available on the market for use on plants as an alternative botanical pesticide to chemical pesticides. The sulfurs contained within the garlic extract have been shown to be effective against a wide range of insects, including mosquitoes, and the lingering odor can deter mosquitoes from the area for weeks.…

Dengue, also known as breakbone fever, played a fatal role in the Philippine economy for the previous years. More than sixty two thousand dengue cases were recorded last year and more than five hundred patients have died. No existing treatment has been approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) to completely turn down the virus once it starts infecting a patient; therefore prevention had been the point of action of the community in the past decades. They used natural ways of prevention like restraining themselves from keeping piled water within their area and artificial ways like using insect repellants or mosquito killers.…

For the natural repellent with the most scientific backing, look to lemon eucalyptus oil, the sole natural ingredient to get the EPA’s (Environmental protection agency) endorsement. Numerous studies show that it works just as effectively as low levels of DEET (N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide) (7 percent to 15 percent concentrations) by masking the body’s natural odors. Look for a 30 percent to 40 percent concentration for maximum effectiveness.…

This essential oil proved to be one of the top performers in a comparative study of insect repellents published in July, 2002 in the New England Journal of Medicine. The two commercial sprays tested kept bugs away from 1 to 3 hours. The results of a 2004 California State Science Fair project show that lemongrass is 30 percent less effective than commercial preparations containing DEET, or diethylmetatoluamide, in repelling mosquitoes. Lemongrass, or cymbopogon ciatrus, may still be a suitable substitute for persons who cannot tolerate DEET. A study published on the CBS News website compares natural-based insect repellents against DEET products. According to the news network, natural products like lemon grass and citronella work by scent and must be reapplied more often than DEET-based products.…
