Better School Lunches Research Paper
Having better school lunches would improve the eating habits of children. I believe that if schools were informed about the consequences of bad eating habits to the children they would do something to improve the food being served. Children nowadays tend to just eat junk food and call it a “meal.” The school lunches are not exactly a great healthy meal, food that is served is full of sodium and high on saturated fats and is usually low in fiber and lacks all the nutrients that can be found in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. There are other schools that have healthy food options for everyone; without all the unhealthy fats and all of the unnecessary grease on the food.
Having access to healthier lunches would be a huge benefit to all.

Instead of chips, there could be a pack of almonds or some kind of nuts as those are a healthier option. There should be little packs of peanut butter so that the students are able to dip their fruit of choice into it. Another healthy option could be yogurt with either cereal or fruit. There should be granola bars that do not have too much sugar available as well, as those do not have too many calories and can fill up an empty stomach. For those people that do not like their snacks plain, there should be hummus available because its a dip that does not have too many calories. For all the chocolate lovers, there is a healthier option that should be offered. That is dark chocolate. It does not have too many calories and is the healthy way out. While buttery popcorn is not an option, there can be plain popcorn and that can be a healthier option. Almost anything whole grain should be served because of the fiber it may have. That can include anything from cookies, cereal, pasta, rice, and even oatmeal. The healthy option to beef jerky would be turkey jerky because it has a lot of protein and not too many calories. There are certain cheeses like ricotta cheese that should be offered. This cheese can be combined with fruits to be a complete snack. Another healthy snack that should be offered is pumpkin seeds instead of sunflower seeds. These are not too salty and can serve to be a better, healthier

Recently there has been revisions to the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and schools were required to overhaul their entire menus to provide the students with healthy and nutritious foods including fruits and vegetables. The new school lunch rules are part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 which has been implemented this fall. (Post Standard) The Hunger Act allows the USDA the opportunity to make reforms to the school lunch and breakfast programs. With these revisions come strict guidelines from the federal government that each school district must follow in order to receive funding and reimbursement (National School Lunch Program, 2012, August p. 1). In this essay i will be comparing the positive and negative effects of these recent revisions to the NSLP. I will then discuss whether or not these changes are beneficial to the children receiving the meal and whether NSLP is leaving children hungry or helping children make healthy food choices.…

Responsibility is heavily enforced anywhere you go, especially in schools, a big part of this is learning to do things on your ow. Having more lunch options can make students think about some of the healthier options or the cheaper priced item if on a budget or a diet. They can also learn how they can make good nutritious a meal with the money they have. The lunch room could have a regular meal, such as a cheeseburger or a chicken sandwich, a salad bar, with just a normal green salad or mix it up and have a daily salad schedule, like a regular salad one day and chicken salad and crackers or bread the next day. We could also benefit from a sandwich station, with ham, turkey, cheese and other toppings. There would now be something for everyone to choose from. They students would also have to choose their sides and watch the prices so that to justify as a meal. The salad bar or sandwich station may cost a little extra so it would be good for students to have to learn to watch what their lunch money account has in it often. School lunches cost around $2.50, but a salad bar could be up to $5.00 according to The Playwickian. This does not include any add-ons like as parfaits, chips and such. Schools should make sure that the lunch they provide is nutritious. Julia Tofan, a high school student in Connecticut states, “Students deserve balanced meals that will enable our minds and bodies to power through our busy days -- not a sugar rush that won't last beyond the lunch period” (Tofan and Millerick 1). Tofan is insisting that school lunches should be healthy. School providing junk food to the students are failing them because those are calories that break down easily. Once that food is gone the students will be hungry again making lunch a waste. However, healthy foods will stick with students throughout a longer period of time as well as helping students become healthier. Schools providing nutritious lunches will allow students to…

School lunches lack healthy nutrients that growing children and teens need. Because, schools lack the proper funding needed to support students with healthy lunches, students have a horrible diet. A lot of people, including myself, believe that if healthy school lunches were provided students at home would make better choices when it came to what snacks they ate between meals. If schools got better funding for healthier lunches it could theoretically save the government more money because the students in turn would have less health problems.…
