Eventually, we become loyal to someone or something in our lives. In “The Barn Burning”, William Faulkner shows how loyalty is established through life events, how loyalty can be tested, and how one can decide what they are loyal to.…

Decisions comprise an essential part of our lives, as we make many of them on a daily basis. A decision consists of arriving at a conclusion after careful consideration and reflection upon the different aspects involved; these include consequences, drawbacks, people who are involved and how they will be affected. To avoid detrimental consequences, contemplation is imperative; however, the characters of King Creon and the Girl from the plays ‘Antigone’ and ‘Blood Wedding’ fail to do so. They make choices resulting from poor judgement and the flaws of each of these two characters and eventually lead to harsh consequences. As a figure of authority, the King has an arrogance that leads him to make decisions, relying only on his views and beliefs. Also, the Girl and Creon share the flaw of jealousy that causes them to act in search of their own happiness or security.…

Throughout the novel, The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri, the character Gogol changes in many different ways. One of the most apparent changes was in his "Indian ness". By "Indian ness" I mean the amount of his parents Bengali ways and traditions that he retained. While growing up he did everything in his power while growing up to stray away from his parents' Bengali ways. Gogol spent most of his life trying to differ from his parents, however in the end he ends up obeying their wishes as to who he marries. As he was growing up Gogol felt only embarrassment and shame because of his background and because his parents did things differently than his other American friends' parents. For example, unlike his American friends, while in college Gogol had to return home every other weekend to accompany his parents to their Bengali friends' parties. Throughout his life he tried to shed his parent's un-American lifestyle but in the end he succumbed to his past and ancestry.…

The number one thing I value in my life is family and the love that comes with having one, I would do anything for them. In his play Antigone, Sophocles presents the conflict of choosing between family loyalty and obeying the law of the land. The playwright clearly believes that loyalty to one’s family trumps listening to the law and it shines through as the right choice. In the novella “Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka, there is a lack of family loyalty shown towards the protagonist, Gregor Samsa, who has shown immense allegiance to his parents and sister. In Antigone, several of the characters are loyal either to the law of the land or to their family, while some start off loyal to one and transition throughout the play. Kreon, king of Thebes made a law stating that Polynices could not be buried because of his act against the king. Antigone clearly values family…

Anthony’s speech was more persuasive than Brutus’ speech. Anthony tried a lot harder to persuade the crowd to see it from his point of view. He used ethics in his speech, constantly saying that Brutus is an honorable man to the point where the crowd begins to question whether or not Brutus really is honorable. He later turned that ethical appeal into sarcasm to condemn Brutus. Anthony used a really strong form of emotion at the end, saying that “his heart is in the coffin with Caesar.” And that made the crowd think. Anthony handled the appeals to reasoning better than Brutus did. He repeatedly stated that Brutus is an honorable man. By doing that, with sarcasm, he used ethics to convince the crowd that Brutus was not an honorable man. He used reasoning to point out how Brutus said that Caesar was ambitious, when he denied the crown to be king, an act that was truly not ambitious.…

In the play Antigone, written by Greek playwright Sophocles, loyalty to family seems to be a recurring theme. We first see it when Antigone defies King Creon's order to keep her brother, Polynices, unburied as a punishment for his betrayal of their country Thebes. We also see how Antigone's sister, Ismene, accepts partial blame for the burial (even though she refused to actually do it) in an affectionate, loyal act. Creon is also family (their father's brother), but he, however, betrays this family trust and loyalty when he sentences Antigone to death for disobeying his law. There are, however, repercussions for this death sentence, that prove that there are two central tragic heroes in this play. She is justified in disobeying this law because everyone deserves to have a proper burial, no matter what they have done, and Antigone is not afraid to face the consequences of her actions. In fact, she publicly declares what she has done. We see that while her act seems brave and noble, there might be alternate motives for burying him, and that it could be considered a self-righteous act.…
