Bethany Reflection
As always, there are many great reflections to consider as we are in the midst of the summer months and as we consider all of the wonderful things happening at Bethany. I figured for my July Musings, I would share information which happened at our annual Synod Assembly during the first weekend of June. Bethany sent 4 representatives (Myrriah Wertz, Travis McMasters, Jodi Johnson, and myself). I first want to thank you as members of this congregation for supporting these individuals who represented you in the most faithful way possible. I also hope the report which you will read in a moment will be one to inspire you of all the wonderful ministries happening within the Allegheny Synod Territory and the larger Lutheran Church. Our reps said how

    Jane Elliot Reflection

    • 346 Words

This was a very interesting lesson from the viewpoint of the study of racism. I am very surprised that an elementary school teacher thought of such an emotionally complex lesson. The teacher, Jane Elliot discovered that ultimately racism boils down to an unjustified dislike or hatred of a person based on something that does not truly make people different, such as skin color. In trying to explain this to her students, she came up with a simple yet unbelievably effective exercise made to teach a lesson by separating the students according to their eye color. Having her students separate according their eye color, Jane Elliot created an artificial segregation by making one group “better/superior” than the other because those students trusted…

    Sarah's Key Reflection

During the chapters that I read of Sarah’s Key, (taken place in the olden days) many events took place. In the first couple chapters, Sarah, was trying as much as she could to take her, at the moment depressing mind off of the horrible situation she was in. She was remembering her friend, Armelle who had always been strong even through the hardest times. Sarah pretended to be like her brave friend so that she could be able to get through the cold and unbearable night. The bulk of the chapters that I read, took place in the train through the camps. In these chapters, Sarah and the rest of the Jews in the warehouse were harshly escorted out to a train station where the Jews were pointed and laughed at by the non-Jews. Once Sarah arrived…

    TUVA Reflection

I see TUVA, hopefully, to further increase its presence in New Orleans and at Tulane. I understand TUVA is a small club; however, I believe the events the club participates in throughout the year create a community and family that I wish all members could experience. In terms of New Orleans, I strongly believe that TUVA has an obligation to the members and other VSA to participate in events, especially in GC events, regardless of time conditions or stress. TUVA is not well-known, and not participating almost shows an apathy to be apart of the VSA community in New Orleans. On the other hand, for Tulane, I remember during Date Auction I invited my friends to come watch, and they told me how awesome it was to get off campus for a little and enter…

A couple tugs was all it took and before she knew it her arm was gone and from what it looked like so was her career as a professional surfer. As a thirteen year old, most of us aren't worried about what the surf is like, what types of bathing suits we are wearing, or the type of surfboards we have but Bethany was the complete opposite. Her world revolved around surfing; it was a part of her life, and so quickly it could have been taken from her. She had only been in the water for 30 minutes and within those 30 minutes, Bethany was attacked by a shark, taking her arm with it. Despite the loss of her arm, she didn't let that stop her from following her dreams and doing what she loves, surfing. The life of Bethany Hamilton has changed the sport…

    Catherine Orr Reflection

Professor Catherine Orr teaches critical identity studies at Beloit College in Wisconsin. She says when she discusses whiteness her white students see race as, “What other people have.” Is this to say that they see themselves as having no race? Race is something other people have, but not me. While I don’t believe this, entirely, I do understand it. For me I don’t identify myself as being white, until I am asked directly, from a questionnaire. But, normally me being white it is not something I think much about.…

Firstly, I think my interaction with Laurie Bryant overall went very well. Throughout, the interaction I used skills that I have learnt and which I think I used effectively. So I will demonstrate the skills I have been learning and how successful these skills have been used. For example, Laurie’s response, feedback and evaluation. However, I will also talk about where I was less successful. This will also be shown within Laurie’s response, feedback and evaluation and my personal opinion. Then finally, I will produce my reflective evaluation, which will link into my reading, which will highlight my understanding of the importance of skills.…

    Ms. Qorane Reflection

Ms. Qorane did an excellent job with her presentation on Drug Information Pharmacy. Throughout the presentation it was apparent that a lot of work and research went into the making of this presentation and that her level of knowledge on this topic was great. I feel that the grade given is rightfully earned as she covered all of the rubric material within her presentation. Ms. Qorane talked about the role of the Pharmacist in Drug Information Pharmacy and how Pharmacists will prepare medication-use policies and procedures for drugs, and how they will write articles on improving health system’s adverse drug reaction reporting. She also talked about the impact that Drug Information Pharmacy has on the patient, and how Pharmacists will develop patient safety initiatives and work one on one with patients,…

    Bethany Hamilton Hero

    • 779 Words
    • 4 Pages

Many people list heroes as brave, courageous, someone who saves the day. But heroes are everywhere. They could be friends, family or neighbors since anyone can be a hero. I believe that a hero would be Bethany Hamilton. She was born on the island of Kauai and practically raised on a surfboard, on the ocean water. She was a Christian child, a devoted surfer and was mostly influenced by her family and friends. One of her dreams was to become a professional surfer, and with her talent, it was her destiny. Her life was perfect until one day in October of 2003 when she went surfing with some friends. A shark ripped off a chunk of her board and her left arm, almost bleeds to death. Luckily, her friend was able to get the ambulance and stop some of her bleeding before she got to the hospital. When she woke up and saw she had no arm, she felt as if she were living a nightmare. She was only 13 years old and her dreams seemed as broken. But she would soon face the challenges of daily life without an arm, even do better than expected. Now, she is surfing in competitions again and is one of the best in the world. A hero to me is someone who does great things in a difficult situation. The one who never gives up even if you lost everything. They don’t always have to be the ones that save the day but one you look up to. Bravery, dedication and generosity are only a few characteristics that describe Bethany and are reasons why I think she is a hero.…

The youth of the world can be heavily influenced by people that they come in contact with and some people realize that and try to be a positive influence on them. In early 2012 I was able to meet Rev. Jennifer Carner who heightened my senior year of high school and my church experience as well. She was placed in my church as the youth pastor and was to work with the children in the youth program and enhance the experience. When we first encountered each other, she told me that her first impression of me was that I looked like an intimidating person with a lot of attitude, which I have heard from other people. I was a part of the first graduating class that she worked with and during her time at the church I was able to make a very close connection…
