Best Speaker
Think of the best speaker you have ever heard. What did he or she do that made such an impression upon you? How much of the impression was due to delivery or language style? Now that you know more about style and delivery, discuss what you think the speaker’s strategy was.

In the past 10 years, I was very much influenced by the speeches given by our ex-president Dr.A.P.J Abdul kalam. Unlike other presidents with political background, Dr.Kalam popularly known as “Missile man of India” for his work on development of ballistic missile and space rocket technology. (http://www.abdulkalam.com/kalam/klm-index.jsp) With regards to his speeches, the most noticeable was the one given when he visited my home town (Hyderabad) in India where he talked about “Indomitable Spirit”. It was great experience and made everyone especially the youth/students to think. I could not find the video, but was able to get the transcript of the speech ( http://indianmuslims.in/apj-abdul-kalam-address-at-madina-public-school/) . In this speech, he talks about importance of knowledge which is combination of creativity + righteousness + courage + indomitable spirit. He also stressed on role of creativity and role of teachers in shaping students.
The distinct thing about his speeches is the way he delivers by connecting with the audience. The speech content goes in story telling mode with analogies from real life and also with his distinct poetic quotes empowers with a thought process in the minds of listeners. In some of the videos available on youtube and on his website, he makes audience to repeat his words to leave an importance of the quotes. Another impressive speech was given at the European Union (http://wn.com/Dr_Abdul_Kalam's_speech_in_European_Union) which was acknowledged by union president as one of the inspiring speeches ever heard.
In recent times, I always amazed with speeches by OBAMA who is considered as best speaker in current generation in explaining things

The vocal delivery was effective in that he simply did not focus on the content of the message, but made his speech relational. Throughout history there have been many great and memorable speeches given by influential people. Presidents, for example, seem to be known and remembered for giving great speeches. One President that comes to my mind is former President Ronald Reagan. President Reagan gave many well-known and historically famous speeches throughout his political career. Ronald Reagan’s “A Time for Choosing,” is considered the speech that propelled his political career. The excerpt, “We Must Fight,” concluded the speech and inspired the audience to believe in fighting and not surrendering (Ronald).…

Martin Luther King uses a lot of Rhetoric in his speeches, which he addressed to the public back in the 1960s. King used a lot of anaphora, antithesis, Allusion, parallelism and metaphors in his I Have a Dream speech, which appealed to people’s emotional side.…

Ronald Reagan’s Address to the Nation on the Challenger is a great example of good public speaking. Reagan uses great language throughout the speech and puts people in a better mood about a very tragic event in American history. Throughout the speech he addresses the majority of the population and thanks people who were involved in helping the space shuttle reach space. His use of all these elements is why I personally love this speech and think it is a great speech for anyone to…

Through the semester, we have learned that charisma is one of the most important part of the vibe that the speaker gives off and MLK was certainly filled with the key components of charisma which are as follows: confident, happy, aware of others, respectful, inspiring, subtle, motivating, and had a positive attitude. While speaking to a group of people it is important to present yourself well, to dress appropriately, to make gestures and smile, to have great posture and vocal variety. Without these key things one can very easily lose their audience, and MLK did a wonderful job not doing just that. He kept his audience engaged by speaking directly to them individually not just the group and by having a signpost which he uses to keep his audience on track. One of the key reasons I think his speech is so powerful is the fact that he has an altruistic attitude where he comes across as someone for the people and for the people…

As I mentioned earlier, he can also make this speech perfect by avoiding some little issues. First, there were so many pauses when he was presenting, and some of the pauses were little bit long. In my own opinion, the pauses can cause the audience to loose their interests about the speech; it can make the audience think about other things during the pauses, so it will break the continuity of the speech. Second, there was so much information to retain and remember. Although the speech was well organized, too much information can also cause people forget…

I have watched many speakers while in the military. There are many times that I come out of the room and I don’t remember the things that they had talked about because of the way they had put it out. It was 1 o’clock in the afternoon at the Sky Warrior Theatre where the audience was all military. It was a mandatory training that we have called Sexual Assault Prevention Response. The speaker was a spokesperson from The Naval Criminal Investigative Service. It was a big crowd and there was a microphone that was set up. I noticed that even though there was a microphone in place that he did not use it to his advantage. The theatre was packed and the speaker did not go on the stage. He stayed in one spot at the bottom left part of the theatre, where it was really hard for people in the back to see him.…
