Best Buddies Reflective Essay
For the last three semesters, I have been attending Holyoke Community College as a full-time student. While doing so I have been working part time as a Sales Associate at the Westfield BonTon. Due to being a full-time student, working part time and having household responsibilities I haven’t participated in much of my college’s activities/clubs. However, I do take part in helping arrange study groups for the more challenging classes I am taking for my classmates and I. In my spare time, I enjoy bringing my dog to the dog park in Westfield/Agawam and bringing him to Stanley Park to walk the trails.
When I was a student at Westfield High School I participated in a variety of clubs and sports. I was on the High School Cross Country team for my freshman and sophomore year while playing Basketball for the Armory all the way up to my senior year. I was also a member of Key

I have made so many everlasting bonds and memories that I will forever cherish. Best Buddies allowed me to connect with kids who have disabilities (Autism, Down Syndrome, Williams Syndrome, Fragile X, Cerebral palsy and much more) or better more gave my peers who had disabilities a chance to connect with me and the other members of Best Buddies. In Best Buddies, I had the opportunity to do fun after school activities, go on field trips and even a Best Buddies prom which was everyone’s favorite! One of my fondest memories was around Christmas time, where my best friend and I along with our friend Matty who had Down Syndrome, stood outside Westfield Walmart for hours trying to raise donations for the salvation army. I remember whenever someone donated Matty would get so excited, he felt so accomplished, he would say “we did it, we did it”. All the donations made him so thrilled that when ringing the bell to get people’s attention, he was ringing it so hard that it caused the ball inside the bell that causes the ringing noise to get

Mans bestfriend is often used to describe our relationship with our pets, more specifically our dogs. Late last night my 15 year old chocolate Labrador pasted away, and shortly after his passing these two word came to me. However, I didn't welcome them with open arms. As I reflected on the many memories I had with him I thought to myself that this dog was never my friend... He was my FAMILY! You see I can't chalk up our 15 year relationship as a friendship, because that would be the biggest lie I've ever told myself. I loved this dog from the bottom of my heart and I know deep down there is nothing to fill the void I…

My freshman year in high school, I decided to join Best Buddies. Best Buddies is a program where a high school student is paired with another student, who has an intellectual and developmental disability, in a one-to-one friendship. During my first year, I learned Best Buddies is not simply a club but a family. My second year of being a part of Best Buddies I began truly noticing a change in myself. Sophomore year I was paired with a girl one year younger than me named Carrie. She and I have become best friends and have now been buddies for the past three years. As I interacted with Carrie these past years, I began to realize disabilities do not hold people back, but that we hold ourselves back. Despite Carrie’s misfortune, she wears a smile…

The countless clubs I joined included: FFA, Key Club, Honor Society, and SADD. I began to really enjoy going to these club activities and I started to become more and more involved. Instead of being the shy girl that I was in middle school, I started to transform and become more and more outgoing over time. Eventually, I had the courage to try and become an officer for my FFA chapter. My sophomore year I became our chapter's reporter, and as time went on I…

There is not a single feeling greater than the one you experience when you make a positive impact on someone else’s life. Thankfully, I was able to experience that in my junior year. My high school has a program called Link Crew that is designed to help alleviate the anxiety of freshmen’s transition in to high school. When I signed up to get involved, I never realized how strongly it would affect not only my life, but also the life of everyone else who came in contact with it one way or another. Junior year was my first year involved in the program. At first, I was not sure if I would be able to handle it because it was a club that required a large time commitment. I was already involved in my advisory board, student council, and also I had been on the varsity softball team for both years prior to my junior year, along with working anywhere from three to five days a week. It was a very busy time in my life for a while, but I soon came to realize that Link Crew was completely worth it once I started seeing the effect it had on my school.…

Joining the future business leaders of America, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, becoming a youth leader at Christ Church, as well as many other volunteering activities helped me enrich my community, and make an impact in the world around me. Along with these organizations, I have played several sports in high school, in my junior and senior years I settled on my two favorite sports, track and field, and volleyball. Within these sports I have made friendships with my teammates I will never forget, and learned important lessons in humbleness when winning, and cohere with my friends when losing. By being a member of any sports teams at my high school, I regularly attended many of my school’s events, giving me the opportunity to develop relationships, and gain a tremendous sense of pride in my school. I am looking forward to bringing this same sense of pride to my college, and making many new friendships along the way. I learned over the course of my education to this point, that when I became more involved with these activities, my performance in the classroom increased alongside my…

During my freshmen and sophomore years, I helped organize the Muses book for the year which included advertising and promoting submissions and purchases of the book, collecting art and literature and deciding which would fit in the book, and editing the literature pieces (primarily the short stories). Because there were so few people in this club each year, I made an effort to attend all the meetings and help in any way I could to make the book the best we could. I often was one of two or three people at meetings which meant the amount of time and work I had to put into aiding with the assembly of the book increased. Despite this large contribution of time and work, I did not let my grades or studies waver during these years and I was able to effectively prioritize my time effectively between my studies and the contribution I made for this club.…

In addition, a lovely lady by the name of Jenna Michelle also earns the “best friend” title in my life. Jenna is a 27 year-old goofy lady who has shown me solid friendship for the past three years. I spend a majority of my time with both of these delightful personalities, and they both provide similar friendship traits to me, yet in very different ways. I wasn’t overly impressed when I first met him in an Arabic restaurant in Itaewon, Korea. I didn’t notice his casual good looks.
