Bess Crawford is a World War I British army nurse. Caroline and Charles Todd the two American authors under the pseudonym of Charles Todd created the Bess Crawford series which eventually grew to be a popular and highly rated in the last 5 years. The first of the Bess Crawford series was in the year 2009 and was called ‘A Duty to the Dead’.

It becomes the beginning of a strange case that involves several murders and some dark family secrets. The pilot’s wife is one of the victims, and to further darken the scene, she is found to have been pregnant as a result of an unfaithful affair, although the name of the child’s father remains a mystery. Bess without hesitation takes her story to Inspector Herbert at Scotland Yard while her father shakes his head over his wayward daughter. Bess later finds herself caught up in a dangerous situation where a former officer faces hanging for a crime he did not commit, which becomes a terrible choice for her. Bess haunted by the face and the burned husband driving nuts out of her mind unwillingly gets involved in tracing the woman’s movements, and discovering her identity, while trying to unravel the mystery of the murder. In her encounters Bess Crawford is helped by her father, retired Colonel Crawford, and longtime family friend Simon Brandon, an ex-army man who was Colonel Crawford's batman before rising through the ranks to become the Regimental Sergeant Major. Simon helps Bess most often when she needs advice, support and information to solve the mystery she becomes involved
