Few dogs are as renowned and as feared in America as the Pit Bull. The American Pit Bull Terrier is the product of interbreeding between Old English Terrier and English Bulldogs to produce a dog that combined the gameness of the terrier with the strength and athleticism of the bulldog. These dogs were initially bred in England, and arrived in the United States with the founders. In the U.S., these dogs were used as catch dogs for semi-wild cattle and hogs, to hunt, to drive livestock, and as family companions. Some have been selectively bred for their fighting prowess. The United Kennel Club (UKC) was the first registry to recognize the American Pit Bull Terrier, in 1898. It can be challenging not to…

When I was looking on the computer for a nice-looking breed of dog to have for a pet, I immediately fell in love with the American Pit Bull Terrier. They are absolutely adorable. I went to pick up two puppies that same day. When I got there, I was a little hesitant to enter the house. There was about huge blue pit-bull who weighed about a hundred and twenty pounds staring right at me. They assured me that it was fine to come in and as soon as I did, the big blue ox jumped right up on my chest and started to lick me. That is when I knew I had to have one. They are intimidating to people who don't know much about them, but are loyal to their owners. I bought two of them and loved them to death. They were the perfect pets. They make excellent guard dogs and know who is supposed to be on your property and who is not. I think that the…

Pit bull breed originated from England, they are a mix of a bull dog crossed with terriers. Historically these dogs were used for dog fighting, until England outlawed the sports as cruel. According to the Webster’s dictionary, “a dog is a flesh-eating domesticated animal related to wolves, and a pit bull is a powerful compact short haired dog developed for fighting.” When an animal is domesticated it becomes accustomed to human provision. That means that a pit bull can be taught how to be loving pets. Pit bulls are strong square shaped dogs, medium in size, weighing 40 to 60 pounds; they have enormous heads, minute eyes, and strong jaws. Pit bulls are known as mucho symbols in the urban communities, they have been nicknamed the bully breed and dog body builders. People tend to use pit bulls as guard dogs, because they are known to be powerful dogs with a high tolerance for pain. In addition, people use pits for selfish pleasures such as dog fighting. Legislation is coming together in order to stop the breeding of pit bulls, in order to crack down on dog fighting and vicious attacks. In the words of Tami Harbolt-Bosco “these dogs are terriers, they are strong willed. You have to know what you are doing with them. When you get a good one, they are wonderful-very trusting” (qtd. in Lawerence).…

It may be challenging to travel with a larger breed of dog because the couple rely on public transit. The public transit rules regarding pets vary from city to city, and in some cases certain forms of transit do not allow larger dogs. In other cases, pets are allowed on transit during off peak hours, must be within a smaller size range, or must be transported in a crate. This may result in the Darcy’s often leaving the German Shepherd at home. German Shepherds are also a loyal and protective breed, and in the cases they board transit, there is a risk they may react unfavourably if a stranger were to walk or sit too close to their owner. The couple may also find it difficult to transport their dog to a veterinarian’s office with restricted transit access, and if the city they reside in happens to not allow large dogs on public transit, that could pose a serious…

Developmental Orthopedic Disease occurs most commonly in young growing animals especially in giant breed dogs such as Mastiffs, Great Danes, Rottweiler’s and many other large to giant breed dogs. The key component of preventing this disease is proper nutrition. Some important nutritional factors of this disease to make sure and avoid are free choice feeding, excessive mineral intake at a young age, excessive calcium intake and an imbalance of vitamin D metabolites. Calcium and Phosphorus levels are a key component in avoiding D.O.D. If your puppy consumes excess amounts of phosphorus or calcium or if your dog is deficient that can also be a problem. Large breed puppies Calcium and Phosphorus ratios need to be on the lower end of the normal ratio for puppies, which is 1:1 to 2:1. Many pet owners do not realize the importance of feeding your dog the right food for their age and may…
