Beowulf
Beowulf is a Man for Others and a True Hero
Beowulf is the oldest and longest piece of Anglo-Saxon literature. Beowulf is also an epic, as it is about an almost inhuman hero. He is the perfect medieval hero because he is brave, strong, confident, and honorable. Beowulf came from Geatland to help the Danes with their monster problem. Beowulf is already a hero among the Geats and soon becomes a hero of the Danes. Beowulf is a man for others and a true hero because he is selfless, he performs heroic actions, and he is willing to die in battle.
Beowulf is a man for others and a true hero because he is selfless. Beowulf sailed across the ocean to fight a monster descended from the first murderer in a different land than his own. “In his far-off home Beowulf, Higlac’s follower and the strongest of the Geats heard how Grendel filled nights with horror and quickly commanded a boat fitted out proclaiming he’d go to that famous king, now when help was needed.(16)” Beowulf is selfless because he is willing to help a tribe that is not even his own. He is a selfless hero because most people would not fight a monster descended from Cain, but he fought two to help the Danes and avenge a death. Beowulf’s actions show he is a man for others and a perfect hero by his selflessness.
Beowulf proved that he is a true hero by his heroic deeds and actions. Beowulf is honorable, as part of the reason he decided to help the Danes is because Hrothgar helped out Beowulf’s father, and Beowulf wants to honor that debt. Beowulf showed a heroic deed when he ripped Grendel’s arm off with only his hands, an impressive show of his massive strength. “He twisted in pain, and the bleeding sinews deep in his shoulder snapped, muscle and bone split and broke.(25)” Beowulf has many heroic deeds in fighting many monsters, even before Grendel, such as giants and sea monsters just for the glory and honor. Beowulf’s bravery and honor was proven when he was willing to fight a dragon in his old age because

He felt as if it was right, he says “They had in remembrance my courage and might. Many had seen me come safe from the conflict.” He never expected anything from anybody after anything he would do.…

Also he loved to travel to towns to help people defeat evil. But all in all he was a wise man, knew what he was doing. That is why we think Beowulf is a great Epic Hero.…

First, readers should agree Beowulf acts altruistically for the people of Hrothgar’s kingdom because he sacrifices himself to defeat Grendel. Beowulf proves his altruism when he says, “…That I, alone and with the help of my men,/ may purge all evil from this hall (165-166). Here, Beowulf says he wants to defeat the monster Grendel so the people of Herot will not be in danger. Is this not altruism? Is this not representative of hero-like qualities? Beowulf knows he can defeat Grendel and stop the killing of Hrothgar’s people, but when Beowulf has to defeat Grendel’s mother so she could avenge her son’s death, he is not so certain he can win. “…no sword could slice her evil/ skin, that Hrunting could not hurt her…” (599-600). Here, Beowulf almost dies when he fights Grendel’s mother since his sword is useless, and so what benefit does he have in fighting her besides preventing her from taking Grendel’s place and killing the people of Herot? The reader can plainly see that Beowulf is acting out of altruism, acting for others, not himself.…

Heroes did what they did for recognition. Beowulf did not travel all that way to merely risk his life out of the goodness of his heart. Not only is today’s definition of hero far different, it is thrown around too much. Anyone who potentially puts himself in harm’s way is called a hero, like a soldier who is deployed, but never performs an act of courage. In actuality, true heroes value others over themselves, and show that by deeds of sacrifice. A hero risks life and limb to help another survive. When one looks at the tragic events of 9/11 everybody was trying to flee the buildings, down the stairs. The heroes were the ones who went up, knowing that they might not even be coming back down. There is a story of the “man in the red bandana,” an office worker who used to a be a volunteer firefighter. While everyone was fleeing downwards he went up and helped about a dozen people to safety. Sadly, his life was lost that day but he knew that was a possibility when he chose to go up. His moral compass sent him…

Although the other two can also be considered to be heroes in one way or the other, they have several misdoings that discredit their heroic acts. In addition, some of their heroic acts border on their own selfish interests which leads to their downfall. Beowulf, on the other hand, comes across as a man of the people. His most famous heroic act is aimed at saving the common people from the beast, Grendel, who has wreaked havoc on them for a long time. Although he also seeks a reputation for himself, this is nevertheless not his main motivation for his heroic acts. An ideal hero is one who places his own life and reputation on the line for the sake of others, and this is exactly what Beowulf does. His selflessness and his courage makes the Geat people realize that he would be an ideal king, and they, therefore, make him one. Boasting was considered to be part of a hero’s actions. According to Murphy, “The man who vowed to do a certain heroic deed was often the man who could and did boast about heroic deeds already achieved; the man who boasted about deeds performed could be expected to perform heroically again” (Murphy 105). His actions here are therefore…
