Benjamin Franklin was a man of many talents. He became well known around the globe for his jobs as being an inventor, printer, scientist, diplomat, postmaster, and politician. He was the most known for drafting the Declaration of Independence with other founding fathers. Ben gave huge contributions to our world during his time living. He was born on January 17, 1706 in Boston, Massachusetts. Out of all his siblings, he was the favorite of his parents, Josiah Franklin and Abiah Folger. As a little boy, he liked to save his earnings to buy anything he was able to get his hands on. He was also inventing new things at an early age. The armonica is basically a musical instrument made out of glass. He named it "the armonica after the Italian word armonia, which means 'harmony'" (Vleet 20). He loved to listen to music and play along with his daughter Sarah. His next great invention was his bifocals. The bifocals where his own version of glasses. Benjamin Franklin loved to read and write. "Because Ben loved reading so much," he decided to invent something that would help "make the experience of reading books easier and more enjoyable" (Vleet 27). As Benjamin Franklin would become older, his eyes were starting to die down. He started needing two pairs of glasses, "one pair was for seeing things that were close up, and one was for seeing things far away" (Vleet 28). He created the bifocals because "he hated having to switch back and forth" so he could see (Vleet 28). The bifocals and the armonica were Benjamin Franklin's greatest inventions. Another one of Benjamin's inventions was paper money. If you notice, Benjamin Franklin, today, is on the $100 bill. Back then, there was no such thing as paper money. They had silver and gold coins used as their currency. It was a real problem for them because they would carry big, heavy coins all day in their pockets.
