Benjamin Franklin...A Misogynist?
You asked us to read "Old Mistresses Apologue" to see how Benjamin Franklin begins as a solemn friend and adviser to a young man but soon reveals himself as a hedonistic lecher, then after reading you asked if we see any signs of a misogynist in Benjamin Franklin's letter. To begin I looked up the word misogynist to get a better understanding of what it meant. According to Webster's Dictionary, misogynist means a hatred of or hostility toward women, a women hater. After reading Benjamin Franklin's letter, it was hard to see Mr. Franklin as a women hater. I find him being finicky about his women preferring older to younger women being almost discriminatory towards younger women in general, but not actually a women hater. If anything, he has good things to say about women as a whole.

In the very first paragraph of his letter, Benjamin Franklin says great things of women in the state of union with a man. First, he states that "It is the Man and Woman united that make the compleat human Being." [sic] Those are powerful word to say if you are a women hater. He also states in the same paragraph that man would be of less value if they were not married and they are incomplete without their better half. Hence his words, "A single Man has not nearly the Value he would have in that State of Union. He is an incomplete Animal. He resembles that odd Half of a Pair of Scissars." [sic]

Beginning after the first paragraph Benjamin Franklin begins stating increasingly how he would prefer an older woman to a younger one saying; "you should prefer old Women to young ones." [sic] Then he proceeds to explain why he believes this theory with eight different reasons.

The very first point, Franklin explains that older women are better because they are smarter, more experienced and can hold a conversation that is more interesting than that of a younger women.

In his second point, he explains how when women get older they can do more for you and take better care of you. He even states that "there is hardly a thing as an old woman who is not a good Woman." [sic] Therefore, if Benjamin Franklin was a misogynist I hardly think he would have stated that women were even good in any right.

Benjamin Franklin's fourth point explains how older women are less likely to stray and if they did it would be more accepted by an older woman than a younger one. Since older women are so willing to take care of younger man and help to shape his values and manners. This can be seen best in this line, "Because thro' more Experience, they are more prudent and discreet in conducting an Intrigue to prevent Suspicion." [sic]

Now in Benjamin Franklin's fifth point I see him saying something that can be seen as misogynist comment, "and regarding only what is below the Girdle, it is impossible of two Women to know and old from a young one. And as in the dark all Cats are grey." [sic] That comment to me can be taken as an insult to women, I don't think that everything below the "girdle" or waist is what makes all women young and old alike, but I do see Franklin's point.

Now lastly, my favorite comment had to have been in his eighth point when he states that older women are better to marry than young ones because, "They are so grateful!!" That comment in it self should be an indication that Benjamin Franklin was not a misogynist, he may have said one or two things that can be taken that way. Nevertheless, Franklin seems to like women in general he definitely had more nice things to say about women than anything else, almost as though he couldn't be without a woman.

My topic is Rosalind Franklin: Exploring the human genome and encountering prejudice. I chose this topic is because Franklin’s contribution to unlocking the secrets of DNA structure is easily one of the greatest and most important discoveries of the 20th century. Franklin managed to pave the road to the discovery of DNA structure even while dealing with the bias towards being a female scientist in her time then passed away from cancer which was most likely caused by the excessive exposure to the X-ray radiation she used in her research. I found Franklins story to be very inspirational and it fit into the guidelines of this years NHD theme very well in my…

He would later on establish his own printing shop. When opening his printing shop he published his successful paper “Poor Richard’s Almanack”.…

With specific time and setting that establish authenticity; this hoax, written allegedly by Benjamin Franklin, has the purpose to ridicule Puritan Beliefs. Throughout this hoax, the narrator is deeply uninvolved; he ironically describes puritan folks with comic exaggeration. Benjamin Franklin portrayed puritans as an entertainment spectacle and ridiculed their beliefs such as witchcraft. Franklin states, “ 300 People were gathered together to see an Experiment or two tried on some Persons accused of Witchcraft”. To apprehend the joke it is crucial to point out the connotations of the word “experiment”. Experiments are unproven procedures that are still being tested and have no definite result yet. This term was Benjamin Franklin’ first of…

In the Book of Ages, The Life and Opinions of Jane Franklin, Jill Lapore argues that Jane Franklin faced challenges living according to gender roles imposed by the society of the day. In Jill Lapore’s, Book of Ages, Jill writes, “From our Infancy we are nurs’d up in Ignorance and Vanity,” Astell complained; girls’ “very Instructors are Froth and Emptiness.” Women were no better educated than the beasts: …” (Lapore, Book of Ages, 18). Jane Franklin could not go to public school because no public school in 18th century Boston admitted girls. Her brother Benjamin Franklin went to grammar school and studied Latin and Greek after a few years his dad pulled him out of school to help make Candles in the family business. When thinking of Benjamin Franklin, two thoughts come to my mind. His part in the founding of electricity due to his experiments with the kite and the key was engraved in my head from a young age. Also, the familiar face found at the center of possibly my favorite piece of paper I could have in my wallet at any time. But what lead to Benjamin Franklin being a figure so known and idolized, not only in early British American history but, in our world today? The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin outlines the life of a proclaimed self made man whose knowledge and hard work lead him to be a powerful and admired public figure in British North America. By implementing Toby Ditz’s idea surrounding masculinity that “the larger gender order within which masculinity is embedded is also fundamentally about…

Benjamin Franklin and Fanny Fern’s writings exemplified, and even sparked gender role controversy for over many years during the mid-1800s and the mid-1900s. Franklin’s writings primarily showed up in daily newspapers and appealed more to a male audience, rather than a wider female audience that Fern had obtained in her writings as a social critic. In the readings “Tom Pax’s Conjugal Soliloquy,” Fanny Fern and “The Speech of Miss Polly Baker,” by Benjamin Franklin, they both demonstrate opposite gender roles, illustrate situations in which women are not being paid attention to, and their audiences appeal to the gender role opposite to the…

As stated in First Generations: Women in Colonial America, women weren’t often allowed many rights that were given to men freely at the time. Women in colonial times in the Chesapeake, for example, were treated as second-class citizens, but mainly if they were married. The only time when these men seemed to accept a woman with freedom was if she was a widow. Men such as John Winthrop were outraged by ideas such as a woman educating a man on or coming to her own conclusions about scripture. This was presumably because it threatened the way of life in which men were in all but complete religious, political, and monetary control. Men in this period were known to listen to their wives’ advice on certain matters, but even their opinions then were little more than just that in the ears of colonial men. This is a slightly less subjugated example, however, than that of the New England woman; who, as Berkin states on page 27, “No position she held within the family was ever characterized by autonomy.” This particular line got my attention because of how blatant the statement is. In the middle colonies, however, women may have been considered to have more freedoms, at least when it came to the work force.…

Washington Irving is a man who is questioned for being misogynistic or not. I believe Washington Irving wasn’t to be blamed for how the main characters are treated in his stories. I would blame at the time frame Washington Irving was living in. Irving lived from 1783 to 1859; in this timeline, women were viewed as caretakers of the family. Certain men had a different view of women such as being nuisance, a problem, or someone who is not trustworthy. There may have been stories from men that could be lies or the truth. Men could say having a wife is a curse, while other men say a wife is a blessing.…
