Thanksgiving will be relatable to the people because the time in holiday many charities are asking for donations. It makes some people think that others give only on holidays or give when they see someone else is giving.…

The article “In Defense of Liz Lemon” by Emily Nussbaum is an opinionated article on the character development of Liz Lemon from the popular tv series “30 Rock”. The article “Black Friday: Consumerism Minus Civilization” is an opinionated article on the holiday that has become Black Friday. Although the two articles are about completely different in content and tone and written on unrelated subjects, there are many similarities within the two shown through their passion and proof that things that were once good, don’t always remain so.…

“Buy Nothing Day”, a day in which people are urged to purchase no goods, has good intentions, but may actually have more of a negative effect than a positive one. Yes, this one day may promote awareness to the problems of overconsumption, but it could harm the economy even more. Also, people spend money every day on water and electricity, therefore those who don’t buy anything on this day are actually still paying for these services. Overall, the day has good intentions, but could actually do more harm than good.…
December 25, 1774: Christmas Day. My father has given me a most precious gift today, this diary. He has encouraged me to record my thoughts and experiences in this book. I think my father knows we are living through changing times. The old ways and harmony with our mother country are beginning to fray. He has told me that one day, when I am an old man, I will look back and reflect on all that has occurred during my life and be amazed. I wonder if he is right……
The author’s most compelling point is Buy Nothing Day is a way to increase awareness of excessive consumption. Also, to expose the environmental and ethical consequences of overconsumption. It sure does make an awareness towards the people, but does it make a difference? “A day on which people are urged to purchase no goods”, but do they fulfill it? A consumer may…
Thanksgiving represents what it's like to be an American because on that day my family does something that only happens once a year. My family gathers around the dinner table and we all pray, thank god, talk, laugh, sing and for those of us who can’t sing, listen and we eat untill we pass out. Thanksgiving to me is a time where all is right, where family comes together and we refelct on the year, the good, the bad, we talk about our plans for the future and morn our losses of the year. Thanksgiving defines being American by making my family united, and that’s what being an American is, being…
“Black Friday: Consumerism Minus Civilization” is an essay written by Andrew Leonard. This Essay expresses Andrews disgust for the commercialized “holiday” of Black Friday. He acknowledges the fact that “vigorous sprees of retail spending” is essential for the economy. That with an “occupy Black Friday” or without a “robust Christmas shopping season” the economy could decline and more layoffs and pay cuts could result. He states, “But there’s also a point where healthy consumerism becomes out-of-control marketing-driven commodity fetishism.” Referring to the Black Friday tradition as insanity. Criticizing retail moguls such as Kohls and Target, saying that the Crazy Target Lady is scary, wrong, and a lunatic. The way the Crazy Target Lady is proud of her OCD – obsessive Christmas disorder – is the reason people are trample each other to death. He compares her to America saying, “She might be a lunatic, but it’s a culturally approve lunacy – the kind that keeps the American engine of capitalism all stoked up.” The fact that “the message that keeps getting blasted across the TV is that we should all be more like her – doing out patriotic duty.” He reflects on the “budding protest” against many retail chains to start their Black Friday sales at midnight on Thanksgiving. He talks about the many petitions in circulation protesting the earlier start of Black Friday sales like “Save Thanksgiving” and “Respect the Bird”. He refers to the constant one-upping of retailers as “dehumanizing and ridiculous”. He calls Black Friday shoppers “pre-programmed automations”. Which seems to be an appropriate name because we have allowed ourselves to become brainwasher by mindless jingles and commercials.…
In Jeffrey Rosen’s essay “The Naked Crowd”, he argues that people have a desire to prove and establish themselves as trustworthy in today’s society. Pressured by the public eye, many feel the need to convey personal details about themselves in order to gain this trust and feel more secure. Rosen critiques this idea, noting that if everyone exposes personal information, individuality is lost and anxiety about identity will remain.…
Asking American consumers to boycott all goods for a day could have negative effects on the country’s economy in many ways. Consumer spending almost single handedly carries the economy and makes up almost 70% of the gross domestic product. Not only does a Buy Nothing Day day have the potential to lower the GDP, but it would also cause instability in an already fragile economy that is still recovering from a recession. On a more personal level, a Buy Nothing day could seriously affect small businesses that depend on daily sales much more than large companies and workers in sales positions. If stores knew that they would not see many customers on a Buy Nothing Day, they may ask many workers to stay home which could be harmful to people who depend on work every day to pay for their living expenses. Even if a person was luck enough to still be called into work, many salespersons are paid low, basic wages and then paid commission for the number of sales they make that day to make up for the low base earning. If no one comes into the store to buy goods that means the commission they would have earned is not available.…
Back during the first thanksgiving, the day was dedicated to eating a full meal and being thankful for one’s belongings. Today, while that still stays in effect, it shows that our generation still wants more and is less grateful for what they have. This comes in example from the first bubble of the comic, where a pilgrim states “Although we do not yet have HD plasma TV”. The author proves that people now aren’t as grateful as they used to be, and is a reference to Black Friday, the national shopping spree the day after Thanksgiving. The next quote in the cartoon is from another pilgrim saying “to watch Thanksgiving football”. This is yet another tradition that has formed over the years, and while it is one of my favorite parts about Thanksgiving, it can be argued that it takes away the main point of why we celebrate the holiday. The third bubble of the cartoon explains “There is still reason to give thanks”. This is that last clue given from Granlund’s comic, showing us that there still are people out there who know the true meaning of Thanksgiving, and try to mirror the holiday just like the first…
It is clearly that holiday decision making process is different from the traditional problem-solving of consumer decision-making. One of the main reasons is that holiday decision-making model is an ongoing and continuous process and it does not require fixed sequential stages. Furthermore, the administrative factor is always an imperative role which has a direct affect on deciding time and choice of holiday decision-making process. For instance, Anne (F, 41, family) said that it was not up to their decision, there are administrative factors that stand in the way at the moment. In addition, the other factors having an immense influence on the holiday decision-making process is level of involvement, situational factors, nostalgia, daydreaming and anticipation which are responsible for many deviations and change of mind. On the other hand, the difference of this model is that the decision-making process is sequential and structured. In this model, the customer need services or products which are identified and information search and other alternatives are evaluated. The customer often prefers purchasing a product or service after placing a purchase evaluation.…

Social learning theory demonstrates that much people learn to do something from observing others and imitate the behaviors which could lead to favorable consequences. From the view of social learning theory, this special festival was just celebrated by the special group “bachelors’ at the beginning and then from someday ( perhaps 11th, NOV,2011) on, some people start to do shopping online which was observed and modeled by more and more people. Therefore, gradually a large number of people reached the consensus on ‘Shopping Online Festival”.…
