Benevolent Sexism

The question posed is our society sexist? The answer is yes, for many reasons benevolent sexism to start. An idea that women are inferior and but she is okay with it as long as you tell her she is pretty. is This opens our society up to hostile sexism which tells a woman that being a woman is not okay and do not dare rebuke a man. These two forms of sexism open the question of how a woman deals with this sexist society. The paper will speak about these forms of sexism and what women use to navigate through our society focusing on the gender strategy of emphasized femininity.

Hostile sexism “the condemnation of women with negative instead of positive stereotypes and the use of threats and violence to enforce women’s subservience to men” (p. 150). A great example is social media today and a lock at a couple of platforms, those being Instagram and YouTube. Looking at a gaming creator (provides content to YouTube) she will probably find that in every one of her videos that there will be a derogatory statement. Some find it funny and others strongly believe that they are in the right demeaning her as a woman. That her opinions are not valid and to keep her mouth shut about gaming as gaming is a man’s activity. People are openly hostile with her seeing that she is not a “gamer” and invalidating all her achievements and devaluing her as a person. She is more likely to get promotion based on her appearance than her skills, when it is based off her skill she will find it harder to get promotion or
