The setting is a rural and nondescript village with a few hundred people. On a beautiful summer morning, children get together in the square before they break into groups. While girls chat about themselves on one side, boys begin to collect stones and make a pile. Men and women gradually assemble in the corner of the square to get ready for their annual tradition - the lottery. The author places the story in the nondescript setting to give the readers a strong impression of the evil ritual the villagers do every year. The readers have no idea what the lottery really means until the winner is stoned to death. In my opinion, there are two main reasons why the townspeople take part in their yearly ritual. First of all, the townspeople manage to…

In her critical biography of Shirley Jackson, Lenemaja Friedman notes that when Shirley Jackson's story "The Lottery" was published in the June 28, 1948 issue of the New Yorker it received a response that "no New Yorker story had ever received": hundreds of letters poured in that were characterized by "bewilderment, speculation, and old-fashioned abuse."1 It is not hard to account for this response: Jackson's story portrays an "average" New England village with "average" citizens engaged in a deadly rite, the annual selection of a sacrificial victim by means of a public lottery, and does so quite deviously: not until well along in the story do we suspect that the "winner" will be stoned to death by the rest of the villagers. One can imagine the average reader of Jackson's story protesting: But we engage in no such inhuman practices. Why are you accusing us of this?…

Many things have gone through my head when I think of the possibilities I would have if I ever won the lottery. Although it does seem like a huge stretch, I do often think of what I could do with such a large sum of money. Many people could only hope to have the opportunities that come with winning the lottery. I do know that my winnings would be put to many great uses along with of course a few special treats of my own. A few I can name that would benefit from my winnings would be charities, family, friends, and of course myself.…

Firstly, because there will be someone in the winning family that will be killed, it will have immense psychological impacts to the other family members. When the family members drew individually, none of them wanted to draw the lottery ticket despite that would mean they would lose a family member. “Nancy and Bill Jr. opened theirs at the same time, and both beamed and laughed, turning around to the crowd and holding their slips of paper above their heads.” They are relieved that it was not them, but that would mean it would be either one of their parents. The lottery puts family members against each other, resulting in the loss of unity and goes against the essence of being a family. Just after Mr. Summers asked is Bill had any other households…

Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” offers an almost classic study of irony of situation: the reader expects a celebration; she gets a stoning. Such a reversal is the work of careful planning by the author. The reader expects the lottery to be a celebration of some sort because Jackson describes the setting, details the activities of the townspeople, and refers to the lottery itself in terms that belie the outcome of the event.…

Winning the lottery could change my life in many different ways. If I ever won the lottery I would most definitely take care of my family, and give back to my community. I would take my family and friends on a vacation to Bora Bora. Also I would build an apartment complex for homeless people, and open my own clothing store. The only thing that I would probably hate about winning the lottery is that there would a lot of new faces coming out of nowhere trying to use you just for your…

Rumi states, “Travel brings power and love back into your life.” I completely agree with Rumi. Travelling is the most favorite thing that I would like to do. I am a friendly person, and I can listen to people whenever they have problem or are upset. However, it is very difficult for me to express my opinions and emotions when I feel stressful and sad. At that time, I want to travel to bring my emotions back.…

If I was just lucky enough to somehow stumble upon a one-hundred million dollars fortune, it wouldn't take me long to figure out what I'm going to be doing for the next chapter of my life. I would first grab my The North Face backpack, pack it with what appears to be enough for a week long camping trip and hop on the first 1st class out of the country. Just to get my travelling legs back, I believe I would first travel to Europe again to revisit some of my favorite spots around this very diverse land. A very big confusion I believe people might have is how I will be travelling and how I might chose to lodge myself while I'm out and about. I would not choose to stay in fancy five star hotels that have spas and room service for my rich ass to enjoy. Instead I would stay in the best hostels, where I would have a better opportunity for meeting other travelers from around the world.…
