According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 221,330 new cases of lung cancer are expected in 2011. “Lung Cancer accounts for more deaths than any other cancer in both men and women than any other cancer.” The most important thing you can do to reduce your risk of getting lung cancer is to quit smoking. Quitting smoking is very difficult. To be more successful in quitting smoking, you should first understand the addiction to nicotine, options to help you quit and most importantly the benefits of quitting. Nicotine is a very powerful drug that is found in tobacco. “It is as addictive as heroin or cocaine.” Cigarettes are made so that nicotine is delivered to your brain quickly. The faster nicotine gets to your brain, the more addictive it is. There are three reasons why quitting smoking is so difficult. They are emotional, behavioral and the physical cycle. Emotional is how you feel when you smoke. For example, some people smoke when they are stressed out or nervous. Behavioral is how you respond to certain times or places. For example, some people will smoke during a break, with a cup of coffee or while driving. Lastly there is the physical addiction; your body simply craves the nicotine. Withdrawal symptoms from nicotine can include strong urges to smoke, irritability, depression and mood swings. Although quitting smoking is very difficult, there are options that will help you conquer your addiction. There are a variety of over the counter and prescription smoking cessation products to help you quit. Products that are currently available over the counter include nicotine lozenges, nicotine gum and nicotine patches, whereas Zyban and Chantix are available only with a prescription from your doctor. You many want to do some research on each product, as well as, talk with your doctor to discuss which product is best for you. Each product has different side effects and affects each person differently. After
